They do say they're spirits of the dead!
yeah that's exactly what they are
Tonamel on 1/1/2007 at 03:35
They're generally caused by something small (snow, dust, gnats) reflecting the camera's flash back into the lens.
If you've ever seen the tv show "Ghost Hunters," you'll see whole segments of them sorting through pictures that were taken during the investigation that had any kind of anomaly show up on them. They're mostly just tossing pictures aside saying "dust, dust, bug, dust, dust, clean your camera, dust..."

Yeah, but you know the kinds of things that
they say.
As Tonamel said, it's mostly dust and stuff really close to the lens reflecting the flash.

I've only looked at the "Heart-shaped Snow Beings" page so far, and it made my head hurt. The idea that someone would take a series of photographs in a snowstorm and then express wonder at the appearance of mystical white blobs in those photos is in some odd way kind of infuriating to me.
I'm tired. I'm going to sleep.

Flash reflected in raindrops that are not in focus. You'll get shapes from the drops, the movement and the aperture (and array of lenses) of your "lens". And yes, with snow you'll get non-parallel movements.
There must be better UFO pages on the web.

The interwebs are chock full of people posting photos of dust, absolutely desperate to believe there's something spooky going on (cue debate on religion olol). What with the nature of glass and lenses some of the artifacts caused can look quite pretty - but the photos belong in the bin.

The net is loaded wth ghost photo sites that are not discerning in anyway and post any old crap (including
clearly photoshopped stuff) under the auspices of 'being open minded, man'. Castle of spirits is the only one I've seen say anything sensible about it. Indeed you can pretty much dismis any 'ghost' photo that shows any evidence of using a flash (I must watch that ghost hunter show apparently)

I once photographed a tombstone on an old English cemetery. Normal daylight, no flash, and when I got the picture back you could see everything in it clearly except for the part where the writing on the stone should have been.
Well there had been no writing on it in the first place and that was why I had photographed it, an empty tombstone. BUT STILL!
For good UFO photos try photographing lamps reflected in a window.

Talking about ghosts, did I see a Muzman post in this very thread?
Welcome back. We thought you were killed by the Tsunami.
