Hey fett, sincere curiosity here: did your kid's teacher give him any suggestions on how to go about finding somebody from another country to interview? I just wonder what sort of plans they had in place, given that not everyone is going to know anybody or be able to put a request out there on the net as you did (and of course, I might as well say it, bearing in mind all the hoo-hah about protecting the little ones when they're online).
Of course, I had no idea 9-year-olds were even taught social studies, so to speak, so I'm probably a little behind the times...

fett, you looked nothing like I imagined.
I wanted to see a dark-browed giant, fifteen foot tall, with arms cradling a suckling wolf-pup.
I DEMAND A REFUND!
Seriously though, your kid is cool :) It was funny seeing his face when I said we have 11 official languages :P
I was also sorely tempted to say "No, we all ride elephants to work" when he asked about transport, but I thought the sarcasm might be overlooked :P

We have an official bird. Take that.

Today was my slum day. I usually wear makeup and a dress, but I wasn't going out. :)
He's actually the KING of sarcasm. At age 5 he starting telling people, "I mean the opposite," when he made sarcastic remarks, but now he's got it down to a science. Thanks a lot for helping him out - he seems to retain WAY more about geography and social studies if he can make a connection with someone in the place or situation we're learning about.
I also expected you to be wielding a sword and have scantily clad Asian women dancing in the background. Your desk chair was a bit of a letdown by comparison tbh. :erg:

Ah- we homeschool. We're doing a hybrid social studies/world cultures unit from some curriculum, but mostly cobbled together with help from a friend who teaches social sciences at the local state college. It's pretty simple actually - we're just doing map work and reading based on some ancient cultures he's interested in (Egypt, Italy/Rome) and researching their modern cultures. In addition, he's interviewing 4 people from other countries and will do further reading on those. He's also gotten to spend some time with Americans who have lived in different countries. This morning we spent some time with a local farmer who was an engineer with the U.S. Army Corps in France during WWII and ended up living there for about 20 years after. That was more awesome for me than for my kid, but he still learned a lot (he's very intrigued by anything WWII related because he's trying to learn to play Company of Heroes right now).
I figure he's safe on the web as long as he stays away from Queue. Though the whole Scots/Shug tag team causes me some concern.

Bahahaha. We're perfectly child-friendly. Remember, we each have kids!
I'm sobering up for our interview as I type, but Shug is unavailable. :(

Nice to see you and your kid, fett! I hope he got some good feedback from us all. Apologies for the rubbish-ness of the Web-cam, being a student means I have a cheapo one :)

I hope I managed to give an effective dual citizenry interview perspective, covering off both Scotland and Australia.
When you said "bicultural" a lot of responses formed in my mind, none of which aired on camera.

I noticed you kind of got a funny look, but since we were going for a PG rating, I didn't try to clarify my statement. :)
