Go ZymeAddict! Also conviently forget that the game warns you multiple times that there are some shocking scenes, and allows you to
skip them entirely!
Read what I wrote, dumbfuck. I said you have to play this level
to advance the plot of the game. I was completely aware you can skip the level, but unless it is a complete non sequitur (which, if true, would still be gratuitous) then you are essentially being penalized if you skip it from a story standpoint (not to mention the fact that you're not getting a whole product).

Bwahahahaha
That means jack when the game is built around making the killing of said innocents as fun and jovial as possible.
They're all 1's and 0's so who gives a shit in the end anyways.
Actually, I think it means everything. You see, there's this little thing called "choice". I don't like being forced into committing heinous acts in a video game, even if it is just an approximation of real life made from 1s and 0s.
Taffer36 on 20/11/2009 at 09:01
Well, evidently you still missed the fact that you DON'T have to shoot any civilians in that mission.
Really, you don't like committing "heinous acts" in a simulation? A large number of games have you committing MURDER. Justifications in the plot or not, that's still a "heinous act". What about games like Manhunt? Hell, what about games that actually try for some depth in having some duality or questioning of morality instead of just YOU ARE GOOD BUT YOU KILL BAD GUYS SO ITS OKAY? Are you going to condemn that as well?
Regarding GTA, yes, you don't have to kill civilians in that game. But so much of the design and the sandbox of that game is geared around harming them that I think it's a bit foolish to hold it as being SIGNIFICANTLY different than a game that has you shoot civilians for five minutes before moving on with the plot.

But it's ridiculous that you're even there, complicit in the murder of hundreds of civilians for the sake of gaining some cred with terrorists.

Seriously... isn't the whole point of being an undercover agent to stop shit like that from happening?
Unless you're just... just... work dedicated I guess

Didn't we have something like this exact argument in regards to Bioshock?

(

Sorry, but watching some crazy lady cut up her own cooch with a pair of scissors is not my idea of a good time, no matter how "thought provoking" it might be.

It's an interesting premise, and I know Blomkamp is obviously trying to draw some sort of parallel with apartheid (ooh, that's a really edgy and topical subject ), but it's completely unrealistic compared to what would actually happen in a situation like that.
If non-agressive aliens really showed up like that out of the blue, they wouldn't be shunted into a dilapidated third-world ghetto to be taken advantage of by some sinister multinational corporation and their paramilitary goon-squad. Instead, they would be the honored guests of every major government in the world, and said governments would be clamoring all over themselves to be the first to put them up in style and make treaties with them in order gain brownie points with the international community and perhaps gain access to their juicy technology.
Sorry, but based on what I've seen so far, it's going to be
very hard for me to effectively suspend by disbelief while watching this thing.

Can someone please explain to me why that scene would not bat an eyelash in an action movie, but IS EVIL IN GAMES HURR DURR
Vivian on 20/11/2009 at 13:02
Zyme, one of the major points is that the aliens appear to be highly unintelligent, unmotivated creatures with no understanding of their own technology beyond its limited use, and no real concept of self-motivation. Because they're drones who've lost all the members of their leadership caste. In the film they say that all that high-level diplomacy stuff was tried only to find out that the aliens could tell them nothing, and didn't really understand what they were being asked. It's a great film, go watch it.
Crap, am I replying to something thats not even in this thread? Eva!

Well, for one, it's interactive - it's specifically
you doing the slaughter.
For another, as I understand it, the game isn't an ultra-realistic condemnation of violence or deep morality play on the futility of war - it's a largely adrenaline-oriented "War is entertaining" sort of game. A "statement" about evil terrorists butchering civilians is therefore somewhat out of place.
It'd be like getting 45 minutes into an Indiana Jones movie, enjoying a fun action romp, only to have the Nazis (and Indiana Jones cunningly disguised as a Nazi) slaughter hundreds of innocents in graphic 18-rated detail just to demonstrate that they're evil.
If this is a misinterpretation, then I apologise - this is just what I've interpreted from what I've heard about the game; I haven't actually played it.

You're pretty much bang-on.
