So what do you all propose we do? Ignore Osama Bin Laden and al Qaeda? The world already tried that approach. al Qaeda recently released a statement suggesting Americans convert to Islam so that when they blow us all up at least our souls will be AOK! And we are supposed to ignore that?

The dude mistakenly comparing a European Fascist dictator with a fringe-group terrorist influenced by completely disparate factors has been ignoring Bin Laden since about 2003.
So maybe you should take it up with him.
Cheap shots aside, it was an utterly ludicrous thing to suggest. It's an attempt to hammer home some kind of "Pearl Harbour = 11th Sept", "World War 2 = War On A Noun" equivalence, which is irritating and insulting to anyone with any conception of history whatsoever. I guess whoever wrote the speech is also hoping to reinforce the recent bizarre thinking that combines extreme Islamic activity with Fascism - handily ignoring about five million things which differentiate the two.
I already know Fascism is wrong.
I am also aware that blowing yourself (and others) up for a religious cause is wrong.
Both things being wrong doesn't make them similar in anything other than an entirely facile way.
It is also quite possible to hold the views "this statement was bollocks" and "ignoring Alan Qaeda would be silly" at the same time. I'm not sure why you think it wouldn't be.

My guess is that the fascism reference is meant to mean theocratic dictatorship and the link is that the suicide bombers want* a theocratic dictatorship.
*May not necessarily want this and may want multiple things.
Paz on 9/9/2006 at 14:23
That would be pretty wacky, because it's the theocratic elements (amongst other things) of Salazar's Portugal which generally provoke debate as to whether it could truly be considered a "fascist" country during his rule.
Even if you were correct, it would be an extremely tenuous link.
Fascistic countries tended to take economic steps to reduce unemployment. So do democracies. GOOD HEAVENS THEY MUST BE THE SAME!
My point is; there were many facets to facism, as indeed there are to terrorism (or any overarching political term we care to select). Playing "spot the cross-referential similarity" doesn't really achieve very much. Unless, for example, you're trying to engender a link between two concepts in the minds of your population in a wholly disingenuous fashion.
The fact that this is even up for any kind of discussion is pretty painful.

Quote Posted by Robert Oaklev on the Clinton administration
"Overall, I give them very high marks," Robert Oaklev, who served as ambassador for counterterrorism in the Reagan State Department told the Washington Post. "The only major criticism I have is the obsession with Osama, which made him stronger." Oaklev's successor in the Reagan administration, Paul Bremer, disagreed slightly. Bremer, who is currently the civilian administrator in Iraq, told the Post he believed that the Clinton administration had "correctly focused on bin Laden."
Yeah, they totally ignored him.
