Does this actually do anything? The description suggests that you can pass it by moving slowly, but I can run back and forth through it all day and it doesn't seem to do anything unpleasant to me.

Yep, seems the anomaly is broken. If you'll stay close enough for some time, you'll see some fuzz flying out of it towards you, but as far as I can tell it's harmless.

You take damage only if you sprint through it, but even then it's only minor bleeding damage.

Normally they're harmless, but there's one that occasionally gives me damage. It's the one in a crane near the entrance to Lab X18. I've been injured by it more than once when I get too close to that crane.
