How about they just wanted to make a game about kicking ass? And they thought, "we have kicking then throwing enemies in the air then shooting them, and environmental kills, and a score system to motivate the player into kicking as much ass as possible, so how about we add some one-liners too"?
Is that so damn hard to believe?
And while I'm at it, no, Gears of War was not a clever and subtle pastiche of action genre and District 9 was not about war in Iraq. What the fuck, TTLG. What the fuck.
