Overdose was godawful though, that's probably what you're thinking of.
Ah yup you're right. Not People Can Fly then, my bad.

Which expansion pack had the protagonist spouting really cringe-worthy, awful and repetitive one-liners? God, that one sucked.

That would be Overdose. Absolutely craptastic.

Just played the demo.
gameplay:
I can see where the gimick is. It kind of reminds me of Dark Messiah, but with guns. The demo level takes place in what looks like a skyscraper that fell over. So there's lots of rubble piles with rebar sticking out of it, as well as concrete pillars and that kind of thing. the point of the game as far as I can tell is to be as creative as you can with killing people. It's like playing Forza or NFS and trying to get the best times on each track. You get points for combos and more points for killing enemies in unconventional ways. There are lots of environmental hazards to use. In the demo level for instance, you can activate an elevator that goes zooming up its shaft, but since the building is on its side everybody shooting at you from inside the shaft gets squahed by the elevator. Not terribly crazy but they showed videos of other things like a man sized venus fly trap and some other stuff. You get awards based on how you kill them to go with the points. A few I got were Bullet Kick. which I think means you grab them with the leash, then kick them, then shoot them. I got "vertigo" from kicking a few guys off a ledge where they fell do their death. not sure what the difference between "rear entry" and "fire in the hole" was, but bullets in that particular body area tend to give you lots of points.
I dont know about the story, they dont' focus on that too much in the demo, the whole time they're breaking the fourth wall to let you know there's more to come in the full game. They've got a tutorial style video that is narrated by the main character full of colourful duke-nukem-isms that dont' really have much effect other than to make me feel a little awkward playing it in front of my wife. I dont know if the actual game will have this fourth wall crap going on or not, there isn't much indication in the demo about what is going on with the storyline. I'm sure its not that engrossing anyway, the idea here is obviously to rack up points and to watch a lot of excessive gore.
This will be a bargain bin purchase for me, or maybe at some point when I've got some money when i'm bored with all my games. but with Crysis 2, Fear 3, Thief 4, DX3 and Killzone 3, I doubt I'll set aside the money for thsi one. Although, I'm not sure I even want to get it on PC. It looks fun to play for about 10 to 15, which is what I mostly use my consoles for, so I may just get it for PS3 when i buy it. i'll wait for some youtube vids to pop up before i decide to buy it.
the protagonist is kind of annoying. though... this is the last thing he said to me:
"Hey! Dick-tits! This game isn't going to pre-order itself"

Over at the QT3 forums, someone made a fantastic suggestion:

They should have a text-based equivalent of Serious Sam's hippie blood mode (where it spewed flowers instead of cartoon red). So you'd get lots of RESPECTFULLY DISAGREE and YOUR MOTHER IS A CLASSY LADY and TERRIBLY SORRY OLD CHAP and PARDON ME in place of the various upsetting things.
See, now that would actually be funny.

I think my brain just physically cringed. I wonder if I could turn the voice volume to 0.

No one got this yet? It's in my download queue (once again - thanks for the crash and unrecoverable download, EA Download Manager!) and I'm looking forward to randomly shoving explosives up people's asses, launching them into the sky, and shooting them again in the nuts before they detonate and paint the sky aflame while cussing wildly like a jawjackin' space hick when I wake up.
I've heard the PC version is consolised up the wazoo (how appropriate) to here and back again with sloppy shit like mouse smoothing and and ridiculous anti-cheating encryption and whatnot, so I for one am looking forward to stripping back the protection and raping those sweet virginal INI files. Maybe there'll be a money shot somewhere in there too! :thumb:

I got it today and to my pleasant surprise it's actually pretty good. The "humor" parts are passable (maybe except for the general, but he appears late in the game), the gameplay system really works and doesn't really force you to do anything, you can play it like a standard shooter. Generally it feels like Gears of war 2 in fpp and the cover system is you "manually" hiding behind obstacles ;)
Oh, and the game looks gorgeous: beautiful textures, consistent LOD (a rare thing in games), multi-layered materials with detail normals, use of Lightmass — all sorts of goodness you can get with the latest version of UE 3.

I've played the first two chapters and about half of the third and I realized that the only way I'll be able to play the game is by muting it and turning off subtitles.
