But it completely ruins immersion, imho. It changes "an adventure" into "a game". Completely the wrong direction. Bah.
You're right, I would find this ultra-serious, gritty, realistic game much more
immersive without those popups.
Personally I don't like such pop-ups, but I don't see a better way of getting the message across in a manner that isn't too subtle to be missed (like, say, text at the side of the screen).

I'd say it opens the door to sheer laziness, actually. A return to the days of describing events textually instead of depicting them.
Of course, what this really is is bare-faced pandering to the achievement-whore crowd -- those mental defectives who can no longer feel satisfied playing a game unless it's constantly patting them on the back for every single thing they do.

Maybe we can calm down because divisive kneejerk things like popups are easy for the developer to offer a toggle for and can probably be modded out in the future.

The constant kicking people reminded me of Dark Messiah more than anything else.

A toggle, I'm not so sure. They seem pretty fond of the names they've come up with for skillshots, going by the Eurogamer preview. Modded out in the future, maybe.

The text seems like Borderlands taken to the next level, imho. So does the rest of the trailer, really.

Hmmm, trying to make the Burnout of FPSes? That's definitely a fairly fresh idea.
EDIT: Sorry, linked to the wrong video.

I am surprised that you never got that association from the vid. That was the first thing I thought of when I saw it. By the way, this is pretty much exactly what I thought Black (by Burnout team Criterion) was going to be.

I'm going to assume that, in contrast to Sir Kicks-a-lot of DMOMM fame, guns will be slightly more effective weapons then feet?
This peaked my interest.
