Did you actually play Painkiller? Because it didn't really have much in the way of "mostly-flat arenas."
Or Seriously massive ones for that matter. Walking into the last arena in Courtyards of Gilgamesh for the first time was some experience.

@ henke: sounds a LOT like what happened in Dark Messiah of Might and Magic (which, oddly enough, I am playing right now. It tried to make the combat options feels open, but really they kinda felt like everything in the environment was placed there just for you to use to kill enemies with.

My favorite arena in the Serious Sam series would have to be (

QFT. 100%. One of the best levels in the series hands down. I preferred the Second Encounter's maps in general anyway, though. The End-Game SUPAH BOSS was tons cooler as well.

The kicking people into spikes bits made me think of DMMM as well. I only played the demo of that one but I quite liked the combat in it. I think what's bothering me about BS so much is that it tries so hard to seem like a crazy wacky anything-can-happen game but in the end it all feels a bit forced.

In my opinion UghZan crushes Mordekai the magician, and I don't just mean it literally.

This is where I shamefully admit that I never managed to beat the SE final boss without using god mode. I was willing to slog my way across the epic battlefield to reach the castle, but that boss fight was just too hard and too monotonous to bother dealing with.

There are two tricks you can use to kill him easily:
1) Before entering the boss arena, grab Serious Speed and Serious Damage from the center structure and run towards the arena as fast as you can. Do not watch the cutscene and run until you are standing very close to Mordekai. Now start spamming grenades at him. You can kill him or almost drain all his health before the fight even starts.
2) In the boss arena hide from Mordekai's view. He'll only spawn enemies when he sees you, so you can get only a tiny part of him into view and take your time killing him (This does not work in the HD remake.).
