not sure what we could change it into... a clipping far fog is a clipping far fog... basically, it makes all the polys fade to the same background color (grey in the case of the trap area). It's a standard fog method.

Yes, it was an installer error. I have it working now, I installed the demo on another PC and copied the files & registry entries over. :)

It somehow looks wrong. Maybe it is the color (it looks like standard 80,80,80 gray) or maybe the falling-off angle (it goes to gray too fast). it looks odd because you have 10 m without fog, and the 1 meter where the fog goes from 0 to 100%. Experiment a bit and maybe you find a better way ;)
(Look at serious Sam, there are foggy areas and the look very natural)

not that I really know that I'm talking about ... but I suspect that it would be wise to make your grays not actually perfectly gray, but slightly coloured (in the case of Arx, probably slightly red). It doesn't have to be noticable, but prefect colours are an unnatural thing, and might look a bit fabricated and out of place.

I've finally taken the time to download the German Demo, although I don't speak German...
The hardest thing was to define my keys. :)
First, I'd like to congratulate you guys at Arkane...
You did a GREAT job and you took all my request and bug reports into account!
You were talking about a "top ten list of thing to do" but I believe it was in fact a "top twenty (or more)" list.
Anyway, among the new features, I love the "take all" and "close" buttons on containers.
I appreciate the fact that, now, there is only one size of water lilys, which implies you can stack them in the inventory. And so on...
However, even though you fixed such a huge amount of bugs, I'm sorry to tell you that this new version is not bug-free, yet.
Here is a list of 4 bugs. But the last 2 or 3 of them might come from my system (not sure though)...
1 - If my inventory is FULL and I have 1 dose of flour (for example) and MORE than 1 stacked water flasks, then, if I use water (double click on the stack of water flasks) on the flour, the game tries to add the new empty flask in my inventory (which is full) and since it can't, it drops it. That's nice... BUT the problem is that the empty flask is not dropped "down" it's floating "MID-AIR".
2 - Once, while I was trying to save a game, I got a "return to desktop" just after clicking on "Spiel speichern" (save game). Fortunately, I quick-saved it just a minute before.
3 - Once, I got a crash right at the end of the game exiting procedure. (that's not important though)
4 - There's a line of "dirty" white pixels at the top of the scrolling text during dialogs. It looks like your "mask" that darkens the top and the bottom of the text is shifted 1 line too low. But, maybe it's a bug from nVidia detonator 29.42 (WHQL) drivers.
And now a few not important requests, just in case you'd wonder what to include in the next patch... ;)
A - please add the "1152x864" and "1280x960" resolutions in the list. The closest is 1280x1024 but I hate this non-square-pixel resolution.
B - the text in the journal and parchments is a little too thin... But maybe that's because I don't speak German that I have difficulties to read it...

regarding to the MID-AIR floating flask, you have to know that... some object have kind of magic in themselves, thus they do not follow the same rules as the other. Gravity is one of these rules...
note that you could also close an inventory by pressing the magic mode key
yes, there're still some RTD but seldom (and anyway it's not that important when you want to quit :) : this is the one most frequent 'crash')
"1152x864" and "1280x960" resolutions might be useless unless you want to make your CG suffer (or your eyes !) : your inventory would be too small in these resolutions (in 1280*1024 the inventory is "double size" : it appears to be the same size as in 640x480)
anyway for the "non-squareness"... could you REALLY make any difference during the game ? and who cares ? (except 1 or 2 students applying for PHD :cheeky: )

I doubt a simple empty glass flask that contained water is "magical" enough to float in the air. Glasses of vodka may fly for a few seconds, but not water. :)
About video resolutions, that's why I specified that my request was "not important".
But anyway, that's no big deal to add a few more resolutions.
Don't make a patch just for that, but if a patch has to be done, then add a few more resolutions. Note: I've just noticed that resolutions are written in the INI file... I'll try and tweak it...
Le Magot d'Oz on 27/6/2002 at 20:18
in the first demo you could change whatever you want in the .ini file but it could have been changed in the new one : if you try something 'unofficial', you may get back to a default mode (to prevent the game from crashing at the very beginning)
