I would much rather have no Doom mods be popular than Brotal Doom be popular.
Yeah that's the feeling I get from both your posts and Vicarious'. Don't worry, I'm sure mostly everyone has gone back to not giving a shit about Doom mods already.

Brutal Doom is trash. No because its author is a rampant racist and misogynist and a general all-around a-hole (mind you, I think that it is completely understandable if Mark's internet persona have at least some influence on someone's judgement of his mod - as long as that someone is a half decent human being that is).
It is trash because it is unbalanced, poorly coded mess of a mod crafted in large part from content used without crediting the original authors or asking for their permission. It transforms Doom's tried and true gameplay into poor man's ultra-gory CoD.

I'm quite enjoying the campaign in short bursts, although I can report he's wholesale ripped a tune out of Quake 3 for use in Brutal Doom. I don't even mean a re-interpretation of a tune from Q3, I mean it's the exact same recording.
Dunno if he got permission to use it or not. But if he didn't, he's skating on incredibly thin ice given that Quake 3 now belongs to Bethesda and that they are ridiculously litigious.

Ok, but so what? There are plenty of other mods out there for other games that completely change the play style of the original. Going close to home here, but Thief FMs like Fables of the Penitent Thief and Kill Factory and The Haunting change Thief's mechanics drastically. And those missions were mostly applauded.
I think everyone is saying that it's not because of the jagoff author of the mod, but in reality if he was a decent guy who got along with everyone, BD wouldn't be taking this much flak.

Just in case I haven't pointed out already how funny I think it is that all these Doom fans are upset about this mod soiling the public image of Doom, as if it was something more high-minded than a game about shotgunning demons in the face to start with, perhaps this derisive laughter will make it clear.
HAH HAH HAH Haaaaaaa.... :cheeky:

Random gif that makes no sense and probably took me way too long to find
Look I don't know anything about the mod author, and I don't need to. His political opinion doesn't transpire in any of the promo material that I've seen. All I see is a petty asshole (you) attacking someone for their personal political opinion. Now if he's made that opinion public and has acted like a dick on another forum, well that's too bad and probably reprehensible, but I still don't give a shit about it. I'm not on Twitter or Facebook precisely because I don't want to hear about this kind of thing. This is the problem with you (and the gaming community at large) instead of talking about games you bring us the latest gossips concerning their makers. You did the same thing with Phil Fish at the time. I read through all your bullshit thinking there was a point, but there wasn't, it was just the ladies' latest gossip of the day. All I need to know is whether the game is good or not, the rest you can leave in the gutters of twitter where it belongs.
See Increasing's comments above to see how it's done. Now I know the mod is mostly shit, and done with stolen assets. That's interesting and useful.
Edit:

I pretty much said the same thing, but that's monumentally besides the point apparently.

It may be unbalanced, but it's fun as all hell :D . The new maps are nice too. Not the best fanmade maps I've played, but still pretty good.
faetal on 7/1/2016 at 16:40
It was besides the point since the complaints about the mod weren't that it had gore and shooting demons in it, it was because it dialled those things up to the point that you lost all of the other nuance.
My £0.02 is that stuff gets popular because it has popular appeal. If Brutal Doom has that and people don't like it - too bad. If good Doom mods are awesome, but didn't have popular appeal - too bad. It's ok to discuss why something is bad, but very loud protestations about why it's ruined everything forever are just churning smoke for no real gain for anyone.

Doom and nuance is a phrase that goes together? Doom was a great game, hugely influential (for good or bad), but I really cant understand the shitstorm this has created.
2016 is calling and we want our congenial, tolerant Gen Gaming back thanks.

I don't get why it's causing such a storm either (I'd not have started the thread otherwise) and I've been an avid Doom player since the games original release. Though I've not been that active on the Doomworld forums.
But do regularly check the site for new map releases.
