Off-topic (so I'll not say this here more than once), but for the record, I'll take dethtoll over you any day of the week, Manwe, even when I disagree with him (and that's often enough).
I can't possibly agree with this more.

Not sure what this means...

I can't speak for everyone but to me the problem is not with the mod itself (it's ok for what it is) or the author (I honestly couldn't care less). You see, DOOM is a very rare example of a game that has a strong community still going 22 years after its release. People still make mods / maps for this old thing two decades later. Lots of folks have been honing their craft and discovering new way of making awesome things (like Sunlust or Going Down that had stuff I've never seen before, and those do not even require GZDOOM).
But here's the thing: how many articles have you seen on any of those things? Not many if at all. And then there's this one loud and obnoxious thing that got really popular just because some influential people on the Internet talked about it (such as TotalBiscuit). And studdenly it's all about Brutal Doom and nothing else matters. 20 years of creations is being COMPLETELY overshadowed by one overrated thing.
Second problem is "Brutal Doom is awesome!", "Does this work with Brutal Doom?", "Why doesn't it work with Brutal Doom?", "Have you played Brutal Doom?", "You should play it with Brutal Doom!". Every. Freaking. Time. Everywhere.
Third problem is that its irrational popularity has twisted the image of what DOOM is. Yeah, DOOM is over the top and Doomguy is a badass but not to this psychotic extent. Now people who have never played DOOM assume that's what DOOM is and people who haven't played DOOM in 15-20 years assume that's exactly how they remember it. Neither are aware of anything that's been going on in between, all the great stuff created. And since they jump from DOOM93 to Brutal Doom, it seems like the best thing ever for them because they don't know any better.
Finally, the amount of credit people give it. Suddenly DOOM4 is 'basically Brutal Doom HD'. Because it has gore and executions. Yes, because gore was never a part of DOOM. And obviously melee executions are there because of Brutal Doom. Not because, you know, like EVERY action game in recent memory has them in one form or another. Nobody called BioShock Infinite a Brutal Doom ripoff.

Suddenly it's one Doom mod getting widespread coverage instead of no Doom mods getting widespread coverage. To the general gaming public, BD is not going to steal the thunder of whatever other mods are coming out this month. In fact I'm gonna bet that most people had no idea such a thing as a Doom modding community still existed. If you want more people to pay attention to the Doom modding scene you should be happy that a mod is getting coverage, even if it's not
the mod you would've liked to represent it as a whole. It might just act as a gateway drug and get people interested in seeing what other mods are out there.

Vicarious is absolutely correct and I would much rather have no Doom mods be popular than Brotal Doom be popular. The Doom community has thrived for 22 years just fine without it..

Grow the fuck up, you petty little cretin.
You're saying that to me and not the guy who speaks in animated gifs and resorts to doxing? I'd say that describes him fairly well, and by extension you, since you seem to condone his actions.

I'd say that's a testament to its popularity? Maybe even to its quality? But what do I know, I have yet to play it, but it sure piques my interest.
Anyway, I think this is another classic case of people growing up and remembering video games from their childhood wrong. If you're offended by cartoonish over the top violence, get yourself another hobby, that's what video games have always been about. Doom was never a deep philosophical tale about humankind's condition. It was always this brutal, gory, murder-simulator made by basement-dwelling nerds in a puerile attempt to shock their stuck-up catholic parents. You're essentially too old to enjoy this and have become your parents. If anything this mod is truer to the original spirit of Doom than the warped memories of 30-year-old man children.
You see the same reactions with the new Doom game. "I'm profoundly offended and shaken to my very core by this onslaught of photo-realistic violence! It was never this gory and realistic! Think of the children!". Get the fuck out, your children will enjoy the shit out of it and will grow up to become sad old dried up farts like yourself.

It's hard to get my head round just how monumentally you've missed the point of what was said.

Thanks for making TTLG repeatedly not safe to browse at work, btw...
Anyway, I tend to agree with Henke. It seems like sour grapes to get upset about a Doom mod that is getting attention, just because there are so many that aren't. I wouldn't know about any of those wads or projects that dethtoll posted - now I'm checking them out. May sound harsh, but maybe other Doom authors should either just deal with it, or work a little harder to promote their own projects (minus the Neo-Nazism, sexism, racism, etc. of course).
