11/12
Hi
Let me try asking one last time; its just too good a (start to) MOD to give up on.
1. am I frobbing correctly (I explained twice above how I've tried to frob at this crucial point)
If yes, please tell me I'm correct.
If no please tell me how?
2. If I AM frobbing correctly, do you think its worth retrying from the beginning as a new game', in case there's some heretofore identified script error that does not allow one to frob if they accidentally went somewhere 1st they should not have
3. lastly, if the very 1st goal is met (visiting Sheila), and no OTHER goal is listed above swapping the idol...is there some other UNSTATED goal I had to do that I did not that is preventing the ability to swap?
thanks again
eric

Don't give up on getting an answer! I'm wavering between thinking there was something slightly different about the exchange and thinking that as I have a bad memory, I probably don't really remember anything helpful at all.
Things to try:
The various walkthrough sites to see if Broken Triad is listed and if so, there's something mentioned about the idol. Ricebug's walkthroughs provide the main points so if you're missing a goal, you should find the answer. Sites are listed (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=139559#Walkthroughs) here.
You can check the goals (assuming you're using FMSel by going to Thief2>FMS>MissionName>Intrface and looking in that folder for goals.str which will open in Noteopad. There might other folders other than 'English'. If you're not using FMSel then you should find Intrface in your T2 folder when the mission is installed.
Do you still have a pre-NewDark version of Thief 2? I'd recommend everyone having one in order to play some of the missions that are troublesome with NewDark.
Uploading a savegame from just before the idol bit and begging (on your knees, of course) someone to try it out for you and see if they have the same problem. I would offer but I'm a bit lacking in time at the moment. Perhaps one of our esteemed authors could check it out. Or voodoo. If they have the time.
Other than that I'm afraid I'm stumped - assuming also you've searched this thread with no luck.
As you so rightly said, this is much too good to give up on without a fight and I hope you get an answer at some point.

It's possible that there is a problem caused by New Dark. If so, it should be reported in (
www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=143759) this thread. But definitely upload a savegame so that someone can check it out.

Nickie & Tannar,
Tried all Nickie's steps...I've met the goals
Don't have a pre-New Dark Thief...I do not think I'll go so far as to 'downgrade' my thief...life is to short...esp for someone like me on the 'back 9'...
read over walkthroughs, and I just realized, even though I accomplished the 'goal' of Sheila's apt waaay back when in the game, I did not actually 'pull-back' her covers...in fact...and I think this is the key, as its a 'frobbing' maneuver, I canNOT 'pull back' the covers.
I touch or 'mouse2' (or enter key) the covers...nothing happens.
My plan is this:-
1. I'm going to start the game from the beginning...fresh...
2. I will note this time whether I can or cannot pull back the covers...if I cannot then although I will probably slog along to the idol anyhow, although I strongly suspect it won't work...a frob failure I foresee as a coming...
But lets see.
I will again ask the crucial question before I restart, as this will take some time.
Am I frobbing correctly?
I use my mouse2 (or use key if you prefer) to frob...that's to pull back covers...to swap the idol...or for that matter put a key into a lock.
That IS the frobbing procedure for both swapping idol and for pulling back covers...correct?
Or incorrect?
please clarify that one single point before I restart
I thank you

Yes, you should be using the "Use" key, the same key you would press if you were opening a door or using a key (or other item) from your inventory. I think its safe to say you're doing that part right.
Looks like Basso the Boxman was having the same issue you are:

Hi there! I am playing the first part of broken triad and I'm stuck at the swapping of the statues. I have turned off the blurays first and turned off both security fields but there still is a security field that stays there and doesn't allow me to swap the statues. I am completely stuck and it seems no one else had this problem. I'm wondering if it's a bug because I did everything that was required. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!
So, are seeing any of the security beams or rays still in place, even though you've gone through the procedure to shut them off?
eric on 12/11/2015 at 23:39
nahhhh...
I got every beam shut off.
In fact, if I didn't I wouldn't have be able to even walk up to the idol, I would've been blocked.
At this juncture, for whatever reason, I think the most likely answer is that I cannot frob either the idol-swap, or for that matter, the Sheila's bedsheet to uncover her...although I was able to get what I needed from Sheila's room.
So I am going to start the game fresh either late tonite or early tomorrow.
fingers crossed.
for the record, I played the prequel to this FM with no problems whatsoever, and that was made earlier, and that one had a ton of new textures as well.
thank you

This could be the known but infrequent issue with scripts failing to load sometimes. If the sheet on Sheila and the idol swap make use of custom scripts like NVScript, it would explain why those actions fail while normal frobbing/using like opening doors works fine. Can you post here the timestamp on the NVScript.osm file which is in your Thief2 directory where the mission is installed? If it's old, upgrading it may fix this issue as it has with other missions in the past.
eric on 14/11/2015 at 00:08
Yow!
Solved...and it wasn't me, it was, I think, an (older) 'build'
I shall explain-
1. 1st, '...Can you post here the timestamp on the NVScript.osm file'
I couldn't...because before I read your request, I trashed the frustrating-to-no-end prior game (called '763_BrokenTriadv1_0') & re-downloaded from another site, merely called 'brokentriad.zip'
2. almost done part 1...everything is going great...including NO frustrations I 1st posted here as to inability to pull-back the sheet over Sheila to see her headless body, and the game-stopping inability to swap the idol
3. although both download called version 1.0 they are clearly NOT the same
the proof is:-
1. the '763_BrokenTriadv1_0' didn't work for me; the problems I encountered (on 2 different computers) others reported (although which download not specified); the problems resolved 100% with a new download.
2. there were subtle differences in both games...for one thing, Cavadors walkthrough location of the oil for the lamp is in a different place (building with a sleeping women) than where it is in the 'working' game I have (the bar, behind the counter, 1 building across from the prior mentioned place
3. also...and I was frustrated by this in the 'broken' brokentriad, Cavador's walkthrough notes a different name of the women one must enter the letters of her name to open the door leading to the blue shield...it was Linda, and when I 1st played the game I admit I had to go to a walkthrough as I couldn't find the clue to Linda's name anywhere...
.,.but in this 'working' brokentriad the name-clue is different (I forget, it MIGHT have been Dianne)..but its a name in the journal outside the door leading to the blue shield, so its 'fair'...
...but the point is its different
......................................
I actually feel pretty good about this now; you folks helped me; I want to help others.
Perhaps others who never wrote wanted to play this great mission.
Well the answer is download the correct build.
best
eric

The woman's name is randomly chosen from several when the mission starts as I recall, which explains what you saw.
Renault on 14/11/2015 at 01:23
I'm pretty sure there was only one version of BT ever released. Building on what Yandros said, there are several random effects built into the mission, including the things you mentioned (lamp oil, wife's name, etc) as well as some others you haven't mentioned. As far as the different file names go, some sites (like Komag's) have changed the name of FM files over the years for some unknown reason. But in this case, I'm fairly certain the contents have always been the same.
