It might be useful if you said what mission you were playing. Or better yet, post your question in that mission's thread.

Broken Triad?
eric on 10/11/2015 at 13:45
The Mission is Broken Triad, yes...
I must be coming off like a newbie (which is not exactly the truth, but it ain't that far off either!...Hah!
I thought I DID post the message in the missions' thread...and then when I searched out the thread for the mission this morning, looking for the answer, I seemed to find multiple threads...so I obviously posted it wrong.
rather than post it twice (there now), which I've been told not to ever do),since either of you 2 folks might know the answer (1st responder) or I-BET-you-Know (2nd responder) if you'd be willing to post it here, I would be very appreciative
I thank you in advance, and will try to be more careful as to posting the next time
...its my 'geezer' age...take pity Young folks! :-)

No worries. Unfortunately, it's been too long since I played it and I don't have an answer for you, but I'm sure someone will be along who can help.

It's only that it's a lot easier for people to find answers if everyone posts in the same thread. I've moved your posts now and hopefully you'll get an answer soon.

if any of the following is helpful to anyone who might be able to help me here:-
1. there is only 1 objective to be met (on the Objectives screen) before swapping the false idol for the real one...i met it (meeting lady so-and-so); but if anyone else else remembers you 'have to do something' else first, that might be the answer, so tell me what that might be (please)
2. I did,of course, dsiable the blue & red shields in the correct order...but just to be 100% sure I went back to an old save, did it again, exactly following the walkthru...still can't swap
3. i assume i am doing the correct key-press to 'swap'...I use the right mouse (or enter key) with the false idol in-hand,going up to the real idol...just like I would use a key in a lock.
if that's not how one 'swaps' please tell me the correct method
4. I do use tafferpatcher (latest version) & the Thief 2 HD MOD (latest verion) for the record
5. I installed thief 2, the fan mission, tafferpatcher, & said HD mod on a DIFFERENT compuer, copied over saved games, went to an older save, worked my way to this very point...still couldn't 'swap'...just thought it might be worth a try :-(
6. lastly, I am of course open to playng the entire game from the beginning, if this is just one of those unexplainable quirks...I just didn't want to go thru all of that if I was doing some bonehead error, from what i described above
I did...for the record...find at least one other poster years ago who also couldn't swap...but no one answered as to what he did wrong; all readmes just tell you to swap,as if its an effortless maneuver.
i thank you

Looks like others in this thread were having similar problems with frobbing items, etc. Which mission loader are you using, FMSel or Darkloader?
Yandros on 11/11/2015 at 21:02
And what exactly are you doing to try and make the swap? i.e. frobbing the real idol with the false one, dropping the false one next to the real one, etc.

exactly as stated in my inquiry above, which is:
'...to 'swap'...I use the right mouse (or enter key) with the false idol in-hand,going up to the real idol...just like I would use a key in a lock.
if that's not how one 'swaps' please tell me the correct method'
So that's it..I press the right mouse...I press enter...both the default keys to 'use'
(...and for the record, I even tried dropping the false idol in right next to the real idol,
and 'pick-up' the new idol.
I new that couldn't be right, but I tried it anyhow.
no such luck,either...)
is there another maneuver?
as a last resort, I even tried dropping the old idol on top of the new idol...literally landing on its head...and all that did was set off the alarms
