RAI seems to be the culprit here. I'd just received this quest from Maeva the Buxom (Whitmond Farm, outside Anvil). I had to find her husband, who had run away with an heirloom, then kill him and return the treasure.
I got slightly sidetracked and a day later I received a notice that Maeva had died. I killed her husband scant minutes afterwards, leaving me with the heirloom. The enchanted mace weighs nothing, but I can't drop it due to it being a quest item.
I can forcibly remove it through the console, but I was wondering if anyone else had this trouble? Was she meant to die?

On the same note, if you can figure out a way to do player->addjournal "journalEntry", please share.
I have a similar dilemna, except that I have an argonian heart to deliver to an argonian I already "cleansed"
