Also IMO you are the type of person who would throw rocks at troops coming back from a war in Vietnam, which was disgraceful.:nono:
Hilarious non-sequiturs itt

Firstly, was it just stones that were thrown at the British troops?
Does it matter? They were caught and unarmed. I doesn't matter if they'd set some of the soldiers alight previously, shot at them, nerve gassed them, nuked them or shot them with a phased plasma rifle - captured unarmed means you behave like the civilised trained professional you are supposed to be. Not some crazed thug. Have you you actually seen and heard the video?

This is pretty disgraceful. :(

I don't really like how this situation is being framed as a choice between 'do nothing' and 'kick the everliving shit out of prisoners'.
A few steps to be found in between these two, surely.
SD on 14/2/2006 at 18:40
Not in any way, shape or form trying to excuse the actions of these soldiers, which I think is utterly disgraceful.
BUT
These guys are trained killers. You think this isn't the norm? Military guys are not nice guys. It's hard to be a nice guy when your job calls for you to be an absolute cunt. I'm not at all surprised by this film, this sort of thing goes on ALL THE TIME. Try discussing the war in Iraq with any of your buddies who have served there. I have. They all have stories like this. This is just the tip of the iceberg. When you hear Falklands War stories of Argentinian corpses being routinely photographed and the polaroids mailed to their loved ones in Argentina... why is anybody surprised by this?
SubJeff on 14/2/2006 at 18:46
Because we don't hang around with soldiers who have failed in their duty to report on these things.
Incidentally - do any of them admit to taking part? And do they mix with the 99.9% non-fundamentalist Muslims you hang with? (And do you guys all know who the 0.1% is within the group?)

Oh yeah, I forgot, soldiers are WORKING CLASS, you couldn't ever rub shoulders with their kind.

I'm only talking about incidents that they have taken part in. I'm not necessarily talking about beating people up, but psychologically tormenting captives... yeah, definitely. This is a guerilla war, and if they catch some guy skulking round with an AK, they need to know it's just him and not a whole bunch. And you'll get much beter results when you're interrogating a guy who claims not to understand English if you hold a pistol (unloaded) to his head and count down from 10 to 1 while he pisses and shits in his pants, than if you just act tough and talk smack at him.
You're talking about a country where one false move will see you six feet under, and you can't make an omelette without breaking a few eggs. Like I say, I don't want to condone these actions, but if you have any idea about how the military works, then you won't be at all surprised by them.

2 of my oldest friends are career soldiers, 2 of my oldest friends are ex-soldiers, 2 of my colleagues who I am friends with outside work are soldiers.
Why do you insist on spouting rubbish?
You are the one who has told us that people you mix with are soldiers who have commited or observed criminal acts, and who say it is par for the course. None of my friends (some of whom have served in Iraq and/or the former Yugoslavia) have ever told me about things like this. They have mentioned hairy situations, but not criminal acts. Perhaps they don't want to incriminate themselves. Or perhaps you and I just hang with a different type of crowd.
