Britain isn't the only place that closes due to snow. That still happens here in the southern & south western states now & then. Up here in northern IL. though it takes a serious blizzard before even the schools will close.
The Midwest has been blessed by a lull between snowstorms, but it's only a matter of time. Here's what my back & front yards looked like a couple weeks ago (sorry about the quality; I took these with my camcorder):

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c262/Diah_/2009Jan_FrontyardlookingNWcopy.jpgFortunately, I have great neighbors who plow my drive whenever we get more than a few inches. Unfortunately, my snow shovel fell down during the last blizzard and it's now somewhere under a foot of snow and you need snowshoes to get to my front door. Not that I'm complaining, mind you. ;)

Yes, a little old for the photo, it was the last time Texas got any sort of measurable snow.

Mel, you need to take your car into an EMPTY, and I stress empty parking lot, and learn how to do doughnuts. Once you learn how to maneuver the car, and feel that spin! You'll love it. Weeeeeeeeeeee.

Most cars in the UK are front-wheel drive, so there's little donutty action. However, you can go nuts with the ol' hand-brake turns. :D
Last time it was icy here I did a perfect one right into the middle of my parking space at work. I was the only one in the car park at the time, but I was still damn impressed by it ;)

Hah, that would of been cool to see David. Snow can be a bitch at times, yet it can be a whole lotta fun as well. Most cars here as front-wheel drive. I still would try though. :p Here we get ice, I don't care how good of a driver you are, ice is ice, and its a bitch to drive on. The whole city closes down. Its fun to watch the news reports, and see the film footage of cars sliding all over the ice, glad its them, and not me.
Used to love to go sledding, had a toboggan as a kid, man so much fun, I miss it. :(

I once got in some awesome sledding at my uncle's house in the Cotswolds. He lives right next to the common and there's a massive (probably not so massive, I was 9) gully nearby. Good times :) There's enough snow now but not really any grassy hills nearby. I doubt doing it down the road would be a good idea, if I even fit on the sled any more (it's the same sled!)

We were told to go home at 2pm today here (UK), since they were closing down the office for the day.
The way this country 'copes' with snow is teh lolz.

That ain't nothing. Here in the deep, deep south, we're lucky if we see a half inch of snow that sticks around for more than one day a year. It rarely ever even covers the roads. Still schools, businesses, everything shuts down like a 6 foot blizzard rolled through.
The one time in my life where I've seen an impressive amount of snow accumulate (the Blizzard of '92, always referred to with a look of half remembered terror), it knocked whole towns off the power grid for three whole weeks, and it took months for everything to truly recover. Thinking back on those days, huddled around an old kerosene heater and eating nothing but Cambells soup cooked on a hot plate three meals a day...it's like remembering the apocalypse.

I had the day booked off work due to Superbowl watching and appears I have wasted my leave. I wouldnt have been able to get in due to the buses being out and cant work at home.
Had an awesome time walking across London though and it is still slnowing hard and doesnt look like stopping.

We are supposed to get a couple more inches tonight/tomorrow. :D
You know, for someone who works mostly outside...you'd think I would hate the snow. I love it, though! Same w/my girl (we work at the same veterinarian's office).

everyone was driving very safely and considerately, leaving loads of room and going slowly. Sort of makes you wonder why it couldn't happen all the time.
That's called terror. ;)
I got hit by the same storm Dia did. A foot of snow with two inches of ice in the middle. Not good for driving.
