When I adjust the brightness and gamma level I see the difference within that options screen, but as soon as I click either OK or CANCEL, it switches back to a darker (i.e. the "normal" probably) setting.
This in Static and Dynamic Lighting. And whatever resolution. Happens on patches 1.003 and 1.004. Don't remember before that. Oh and also on different mods. I haven't tried vanilla for months though...

That sounds like a typical situation in which your configuration file is set as 'Read Only', so perhaps you should check your user.ltx file.

snauty, that's how it works with newer Radeon cards, at least I think so, because it was fine on 9800 and is as you described on 3870.
Just move brightness/gamma slider and press Escape on keyboard, don't press Ok or Cancel buttons. It will be applied anyway. The only problem that this procedure has to be made every time you enter a map, otherwise brightness returns to default.

I've got this problem too, and rather than fiddle with any settings, I simply turn up the brightness on my monitor buttons when in game. Works ok.
