Heh, I didn't touch Vivec until four different factions and two misc. quests required me to. And I didn't even have helpful forum goers to tell me why. In fact, I'm not even sure why. It's really more intimidating than dangerous.

Here's my advice to Morrowind first-timers:
Don't try to do everything. You're not going to get it "perfect" on your first time through, because there is just too much to do, and too many ways to do it. Explore, act, have fun. A little caution can come in handy, such as "I wonder if I should kill this person or not... they might be someone important later." But don't worry too much about that stuff. A lot of people start and restart and restart a string of characters, hoping to get it "right" in one go-through. Won't happen.
Just pick a character, decide how you want them to behave, act that way, and let the game take you in whatever direction it will.

For a young, enterprising thief such as yourself, you may want to go ahead and visit Vivec. Reason being, each of the House Cantons (Telvanni, Hlaalu, etc.) have a treasury filled with a lot of good stuff. There are keys, of course. I'll leave you to find them yourself though (or look somewhere online. Bah, you cheater! Heh.)

Not to spoil your fun to much but rather add to it, there is an fun non cheating way to find the key to the redoran treasury.
If your character is male there is a Khajiit in the palagiad tavern who will tell you the location of the key after you do some quests for her.
Important advice: play as much in your head as on the screen. This game is pretty good for Playing A Role. Do that.
(I'm still creating new characters, just to see how things fall when I am somebody different... Many of them never end up anywhere near the main quest because it doesn't interest/concern them in any way ;)

I'd recommend NOT stealing fr the various Guilds.
$ is not a long-lasting problem.
