I just started playing Morrowind for the first time, I have The Elder Scrolls III. Could someone give me a synopsis of what Morrowind is about and what my objective is or point to a thread that could give me some answers.
I have been a Thief player and just finished Thief III and feel like I have to steal everything in this game, is that not a good idea?
Yeah, I know newbie questions but how will I know if I don't ask.

Steal all you want, just don't get caught. (The guards know what you have stolen and will remove the items... and it gets worse, if you ever stole a diamond, the guards will subsequently take all diamonds from you...)
You can be stealthy in this game. If you never get caught, the spoils are yours. (you can sell steal-flagged items to any merchant but the one you stole from)
Sorry, there can be no synopsis. The world of Morrowind is huge. You can do quests from important to trivial. If you wish, you can break the main quest, but there is a backpath (the 'evil' path, I suppose). You can become a vampire with no hope of ever defeating the bad guy. You can become so powerful that even the final boss is a cakewalk.
It is all up to you. Enjoy your travels.

Skronk pretty much said it all. Morrowind isn't so much a story created for you, but a story you tell yourself. The world is so utterly massive that you could spend months, if not years simply exploring and finding new things to do, without even touching the main quest. So it's different for everyone.
As for stealing, one of the best classes to be is a thief, and not just for stealing - if you have the patience to level up. If you become good enough, being a thief is one of the most effective classes as you can sneak around without fighting and can perform stealthy critical attacks on your foes. But, like almost everything else in MW, getting to this point will take a long, long time.
Also make sure you check out the expansions (or get the GOTY edition), they're both really good and make the game world even bigger.

I think the people who have already replied pretty much answered this-I've been playing since MW first came out, and I'm still on my first character with quite a lot of stuff left to do. Sidequest-wise, anyway-I think I've explored every cave and tomb by now.
If you just want to know how to get going, follow the instructions given you by the man called Sellus Gravius in the Census and Excise building-i.e. go to Balmora and locate Caius Cosades. He'll guide you from then on. I recommend you talk to as many NPCs as possible on as many topics as possible, that's the best way to get grounded in the game world.

Heheh-suffering from a case of the sticky fingers are we? :) It is hard to resist grabbing everything that's not nailed down, especially when you haven't got much money....but like they already said, don't get caught. It makes life just too hard. And any NPC who sees you stealing their stuff attacks you on the spot.....
Enjoy the game!

Another stealing tip:
Try to sell everything you steal to 1 merchant only.
It's a bitch walking to every shop on the island to locate every quest item you sold for phat loot earlier on. Happened three times in my current game, and I still can't locate those forged land deeds... :erg:
General newbie tip:
DON'T GO TO VIVEC!!!!!
Vivec + newbie = fetal position in the corner.

Thank you for all the suggestions!!! :thumb: Is there a best way to develop the character at the beginning? I mean are there better characters to select and powers or whatever?
What is Vivec?

What is Vivec?
1: There is no 'best character'. The preconstructed classes will do fine, but you can design one yourself if you're anal about it.
2: Vivec is the place you will avoid for now. Trust me.
May lead to your brain imploding.

Vivec is the biggest city on the island, named after the Elven god who lives there. It's beautiful, but BIG and can be tricky to negotiate. I went there quite early on, but the main quest will lead you there soon enough.

Vivec + Bad Computer = FPS in fetal position in corner.

If you go to Vivec I recomend buying a 'Guide to Vivec', I have no idea from where, I just found mine but you might be able to buy one from the bookstore in Balmora. I personally found Vivec easy to navigate, the whole city was divided into neat little packages, there were different cantons for all the houses etc, then they were divided into the rich people at the top(plaza), merchants in the middle(waistworks), and pretty much nothing in the canalworks then even less in the sewers(underworks). Of course everything was symmetrical so you forget which side things are on in the canton but otherwise it was easier to find your way around than other cities when you go used to the whole 'being inside' thing.
