Today's GameFAQs headline (
http://www.gamefaqs.com/features/top10/1903.html) Top 10 Lists: The Top 10 Western RPG's Of All Time features a bizarre paragraph about Deus Ex:
Quote:
Deus Ex is pretty much the first game to combine the First Person Shooter with the RPG. If you love BioShock then you need to pay homage to Deus Ex for paving the way. However you shouldn't dismiss Deus Ex as just a beta version of BioShock
And if you read through the article, it appears that the author is a long-time RPG "nerd", yet he is completely ShockEd by Deus Ex's mechanism (with the cybernetic modules and all).

Yeah, but it's some random dude on GameFAQs.

How long is that? A couple of years since most of those titles are quite new ( BG2 from 2000. is the oldest game if I'm not mistaken). By that standards I'm Methuselah of gaming.

Does that make me an Antediluvian?

Considering half the items on that list are console games, I imagine he's probably more of a "console nerd", and a young one at that. In fact, the list could much more accurately be labeled, "Top 10 Action-RPGs from the Last Nine Years".
A real list of the top 10 western RPGs would of course include Planescape: Torment and the original Fallout.

And Gothic 1 and 2. Also, Bloodlines would be higher than 10th place.
I must try Planescape: Torment some time...

lol gamefags rofl.
BG2 (let alone SS2) came out before most of their readers were born.

If you go to the Optimum.net page (the precursor to TTLG), you see a link page to all the System Shock fansites. Of the dozen listed, only about three still exist.
When you think about it, a ton of PC gaming history is being lost as sites disappear and others go 'console' or multiformat. Even IGN in it's retro section has tabs for 'legacy machines', meaning you can go to pages for all the retro consoles, but not for PC!
I can see a day coming when it's much more than the article mentioned above. I can see a day when gaming history is just console history.
There was an awards ceremony on UK TV the year Oblivion was nominated everywhere, inbetween the awards they had little 5 minute vignettes on the 'History of Gaming'. There were about 6 of them, so a total of 30 minutes. According to these vignettes gaming began with the Atari 2600 and ended with the PS3. PC gaming was not mentioned at all!
Now, with most major sites being multiformat, Top 100's etc have many fewer PC titles unless they are the later ones that came out on console too. Used to be a time when you could go to PC game sites and see PC game Top 100'swith just PC games. Not any more. I have seen Top 10o's with Mario at No.1 and no System Shock to be found anywhere. With games like X-Com down at 47 and the highest PC game being something like God of War, but only because it came out on console too!
I am so glad I kept all my games, otherwise I am not sure I would know half of them existed today! With now almost no web talk about PC gaming of the 80's/90's anywhere to be found! If you want to find out about console gaming of the 80's you'll have a better chance than finding out about PC gaming of the late 90's!!!
Such a darn shame.

Depressing, but a lot of truth to what you say UK John. I used to read old PC game reviews on (
http://www.avault.com/) Adrenaline Vault - they are no longer on the site (though when I asked a few times, they said they might reappear).
(
http://www.gamerevolution.com/) Game Revolution used to have lots of PC games reviews and articles - now the PC is listed under 'consoles'.
[Aside - but has anyone else noticed that most of the gaming sites have switched to a blog format, many apparently at the same time? Those above, plus others like Gamespy.]
