Bows or Crossbows. - by Cebrus

I just got to Vivec and stumbled upon a Fletcher store. This is also the first time i saw a crossbow. What struck me odd was that they had very high minimum damage ratings(30-30 damage on a relatively cheap crossbow). I bought one to try it out and the firing rate was even faster than me Long Marksman bow(1-25 damage). Only one disadvantage to buying a crossbow that i saw was the lack of bolts and enchanted bolts in most stores(hence seeing the whole weapon for the first time). Should i still keep to using bows or are crossbows considered more powerful weapons?

I have both but the crossbow is better, the 30/30 crossbow is the highest I've been able to find. The type of bolt ( steel, bone, silver...etc ) used doesn't seem to make any difference -- unless they're enchanted. I you want to get free bolts go join the fighters guild and take them from the fighters chest near the entrances of some guilds. The guild in Balmora has a fighters chest and they seem to restock it every month or so.

both suck unfortunately.

Bows have a better max damage... and there are more arrows than bolts in the game. I can usually kill anything or anyone with one hit with my bow of shadows, :D... I actually took down an ordinator with my bow and my grey shafts of holding(I used the editor to make guards and ordinators virtually invincible because I was dissapointed with how easy they are).
But bows aren't my fav marksman weapon... I like dire sparkstars better...

In the begining I used a cross bow but after seeing a Deadric(sp?) bow in the flecher I got a five finger disscount and left happly. Havent used a crossbow or any other bow since then.

I'm level 11 and i use the sword chrysamere that has a better max damage than a Deadric dai-katana but i admit that i'd still prefer to use Deadric if i could find one!
It's annoying that i can find and use a superior weapon like chrysamere at level 9 but i can't find a damn deadric dai-katana.
In regards to ranged weapons i found the crossbow to be really effective when i used it with an early character. I found at a low level I could nail enemies by shooting at them running away and jumping up on a rock or piece of furniture to stop them attacking and then just shoot them at my leisure. :cheeky:

But my Daedric Dai-Katana AKA
The Sword of the Leech also absorb health 40+ pts on strike :) so I win! :p

LOL yeah I thought chrysamere had to have some special significance being so good and all. I have to admit the enchantment on chrysamere leaves a lot to be desired and like you said once enchanted a deadric dai-katana becomes very powerful - hence why i want to find one. ;)
I see my 'subtle' hint "...i can't find a damn deadric dai-katana" was missed perhaps you might like to tell me where to find one?
As far as I've heard you can only find one by killing a dremora lord and then you'll be lucky as it is random (as far as I've seen) what weapon these guys have.
What are dremora lords anyway? I mean are they lesser Deadra? Why can't I take their armour!? Why is it that the ones I face have Dwarven weapons?

Now that they added the "Enchanted Arrows and Bolts" seller in the Vivcc Foreign Quarter, I like crossbows much better. Before, it was tough to find enchanted bolts, while enchanted arrows were plentiful. And non-enchanted range weapons are a big waste of time in this game. Plus, it's just tough to come across crossbows. Not many characters carry them.
My new favorites are the bolts that do a certain damage in a targeted area. After loading out with a bunch of these, I was actually able to do stealthy ranged attacks from very far away because it didn't matter if I hit my target dead-on. Anywhere within 10 feet was affected. These came in really handy in the Daedric and Dwenmer ruins where there are a lot of those mezzanine-floors (a level with an open middle part, looking down on the floor below). And since I was in Sneak the whole time, they didn't know where to run to find me. It made me feel special all over.
Pity I couldn't find 1) decent enchanted bolts earlier in the game and 2) a paralyzing bolt. That would have made me lean much more toward ranged combat.
