I have also played the game for 2 years and BOBS takes away a large part of the game. The only way I condone its use is if it is used with the blind effect (use the map to direct)

Yayy, fellow walkers. ;) I rarely find the walking boring... I like to walk. (in the game at least ;) There's always some strange person or a cavern you haven't noticed before on the way... If you just want to get from population center A to population center B, use public transport, I think Pelagiad and Khuul are the only places to where you can't get via strider, boat or guide... (And Pelagiad is practically next door from Seyda Neen)

It's not so much that.... but when some 2 bit quest asks that you visit some guy in a hut out in the middle of nowhere, and the directions suck, it can get quite tedious walking around for 20+ minutes exploring every possable path and still not finding what your looking for.
I spent so much time geting lost in the early parts of the game it wasn't funny... and with a speed of 30 and athletics of 5 you tend to move QUITE slow indeed.

I always ended up SOMEwhere... and a fair number of times it was more interesting than the quest on which I was at the time. ;) But then again, I like exploring...

I guess I don't understand the viewpoint that the BoBS somehow harm your ability to explore. I wouldn't use them if I felt they did that -- it's not like they make you go THAT fast, where everything goes by in a blur. Maybe in my case it's partially compensation for how terribly slow you are the beginning of the game. ;)

speaking of walking, running and such matters...
does anybody else here strafe-run? its an old FPS trick... basically you hold down foward as well as either left or right side strafe, so that you move kind of diagonally, but using the mouse to straighten up.
I find it adds about 50% to your speed over straightline walking/running.
Quite handy....
and yeah, in general BoBS don't increase your speed THAT much, the exception being when using them in conjunction with strafe-running. In this instance it is almost hard to control yourself, though this is in part also attributed to the difficulty of choosing an ark to travel at such speed. Aaah never mind... it makes sense if your used to doing it :p

I agree that the Boots hardly harm your capability to explore. Plus they're a godsend for running errands across areas you've already covered several times.

Pelagiad, Ald Velothi, the Asslander camps and Ghostgate as I recall. (khuul is on the boating network)

The covering old ground is the main reason I use them, I'm not likely to before then (and early on wouldn't be able to see a thing anyway). But they are a lot faster than normal running, which seems pretty slow when compared to the effects of the BoBS.
Khuul is also on the silt strider network too.

Khuul is also not that far from the Berandas propylon chamber; seems even closer with the BoBS. :cheeky:
Chimpy Chompy: Asslander, heh, that's funny. :p
