The Old Kingdom Series(Sabriel, Lirael,Abhorsen and Across the Wall) by Garth Nix reminded me of Thief a bit. Very steam punk-ish. The books are mainly centered around a Reverse Necromancer called Sabriel who puts the dead to rest with bells and charter marks(runes), her enemies being Necromancers who seek to bring overthrow technology and bring chaos.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch. The world is very evocative of the Thief universe, and it's about a Master Thief. The sequel is pretty good too: Red Seas Under Red Skies.

One book that I found had parallels with the Thief universe is Shadow of the Wind. That might seem like a strange choice as it's set in 1940's Spain but it has elements of mystery and darkness, a sect that can be compared to the keepers in some ways, with a hidden palace of books. A recommended read to anyone who likes a good dark story, with less of a fantasy nature involved.

You know, after having visited (
http://www.scottlynch.us/) Scott Lynch's web site, I get
a distinct impression that this world, out of all in this thread, is part of the heritage of Thief Universe. Meaning that I find it highly probable that Lynch, young man that he still is, has played and loved at least one of the Thief games (despite him asserting that he's a Mac guy).
I'm so gonna buy that book. :)

And here I come, in the midst of rereading Lies, to prostelyze about Mr. Lynch - it's more renaissance-based than steam-powered, but there's a lot to use in there for fan-missions and fanon.
Hell, Capa Baravasi could be dropped into the ThiefVerse, a new Warden that will make things interesting for the others.

I've yet to dive in, though.

I finished Lies last night, and I very much enjoyed it.
Its atmosphere is not as much Thief-like setting as I'd expected, rather Venetian or even a little Neapolitan. But there are a number of aspects to this setting which one can instantly drop into the Thief one - alchemy, the Secret Peace, salt devils, for instance. =)
And the main character is a thief, but more of a con man and grifter than a second-story man. But it's all good, because I found the Gentleman Bastards very likeable.

Terry Pratchetts a Thief fan?!
Is there any more info on what he thinks of the series, is there a link? <3 Pratchett, it was so sad to hear about his illness.
