Definitely Dylan for me (and for Shevers if he was here) because he has the widest scope, or he had over the years. I like some of Waits' songs but a lot of what he does makes me think he's been faking that underdog attitude forever.
Also Jack White. The only one of the four who hasn't fallen prey to Sick Boy's unifying theory of life yet.
Why is he necessarily faking it? Seems like bloody hard work to fake something for so long.
I suspect he is the most obscure of the three to begin with, even among "music people," but his fans are loyal for a reason. I also appreciate the fact that the dude sounds like Cookie Monster, but more often than not manages to work magic with it.

I don't know if he's a faker. Maybe that's just how he is. But when every song has this low down, alone at the bar, had too much whiskey and will drink myself to death feeling, it seems wrong to me. It's cool to be like that sometimes but I prefer diversity. And while I'm sure he has some happy songs (I haven't listened to all his lyrics.) I never heard a song by him that actually sounds any different from that.

none of those guys can sing to save themselves, however thats the whole strength of their music, isnt it? Its not so much the delivery as the content which stands up.
Oh, but that's not true re Dylan. The boy really can sing.
Positively 4th Street
Simple Twist of Fate
Going, Going, Gone
Something There Is About You
One More Cup of Coffee
Sarah
You're A Big Girl Now
just to name a few
They only sound primitive. His voice/vocalizations are perfect for the music.

^ So true. It's a common misconception that dylan can't sing. You may not like his voice, which is maybe not beautiful in the Julio Iglesias'ian sense, but my god the man can sing.
PigLick on 1/5/2008 at 04:26
he writes songs that suit his voice. Sure he can sing in the fact that he opens his mouth and sounds come out, but he aint a good singer. This is not a knock on Dylan, I think he is an amazing writer, its purely a technical observation.

Ye, that's the misconception in a nutshell.
If you're an amateur guitar player (I am) try to sing his songs. Technically it's not that hard, his tonal range is relatively limited- he doesnt go as high as Young or as low as Cash. Practice on some songs till you are sure you've nailed them, then listen to the original and find out for yourself how, in many subtle ways, you are way off.
He wasnt lying when he said in Dont Look Back that he has "secret notes" in his singing.
Not to mention his remarkble ability to sing-act,- to deliever all those shades and sub-shades of emotion. Kinda strange that as an actor he's so mediocre.

Never really listend to Dylan, but really really enjoyed I'm Not There, though I obviously missed out a lot because of that.
And speaking of movies, I prefer the acting Waits to the singing one.
