No Country For Old Men, a PS3, all you need now is Metal Gear and you're set!
I was looking at TVs the other day, and compared to about a year ago when I last looked, I couldn't tell much of a difference between brands (whereas back then, the Sonys and Samsungs definitely stood out). Has the technology really improved that much in the last year or so?

Depends if you're talking low end or high end, Aja.
And yes, I've been told to ignore my misgivings of MGS2 and press on with MGS4 once I get the chance.
I've spent enough money for now though. ;)

Well, all I have to go by is the store demo reel, but I like to think I have somewhat of a discerning eye, and I didn't see a huge difference between any of em, apart from the obviously low-end tech.

In my opinion any low-end Plasmas (low on price or size) is pretty much Panasonic's playground, with Philips and Samsung on their tails, LG and others further behind. Easy call.
LCDs I simply did not like at 42", too grainy, noisy and distorted.
When we're talking 50" and above, it's hard to tell any difference they're all so erection-inducingly awesome.

I also noticed that some of these blue rays run at 60 frames per second, which is actually quite nauseating to watch. They had a demo of Batman Begins that, while sharp as a knife, appeared to be running in 1.2x speed.

New technology is priced at abortion-inducing prices, krummi, so that's a no-go unfortunately.
The player is priced around 450-490 euros here. I would imagine your prices are lower since Finland is one damn expensive country.
Regarding plasma screens Id only thing about Pioneer or Panasonic worth thinking about. And I dont find my 42 Sont LCD one bit grainy, noisy nor distorted (personally would even think to get a plasma smaller than 50).
Comparing screens in store is damn hard anyways as the image is on default setting, the stores tend to have really bright fluorescent (proper word even?) lighting and you have to either sit on the floor or stand on a chair to watch the screen from a similar angle than you will at home.

- Version troubles (read about this being firmware locked at BR v1.0)
That's it in a nutshell really. LOADS of discs are incompatible with Profile v1.0 players.
You'd be able to live with a Profile 1.1 player, but certainly not v1.0.
PS3 is pretty much future proof when it comes to further developments of the BD specification.
