Looking to pick one of these up, I've got a lot of stuff on the PC that I want to start archiving and free up some HD space. Anybody used a particular model that they loved (or hated), and can give a recommendation? Pricing would be helpful too. I'd like to have a burner that can burn dual layer, if it's not too spendy.

For backing up data, I've pretty much given up on optical media all together. I can't speak for Blu-ray, but DVD-RW is a joke. Try writing system images of your Linux install to a disk to preserve them, validating checksums, coming back in a few months, and finding the disk unreadable. What complete garbage!... and no I don't play Frisbee with my disks. This goes for CD-RW too.
I've moved to hard drives. They're cheap for the amount of space you can get (under $60 for 1 TB). At that price, I can have two or three to avoid disaster when one fails. They actually tend to still work two months down the road too. I also don't have to keep record of what is on the 30+ DVDs.
Hey, industry, make a form of cheap recordable media that holds ~500 GB and doesn't fail in less than a year. Hell, my 1997-era ZIP drive STILL works, including all of the disks. I've also got a 1996-era 2 GB hard drive that still works.
I heard some companies are developing flash cards that can hold 2 TERABYTES though. Perhaps that will save us. Here's the proof. (

Just load the disc and Cathy will catalog it. Small, fast and simple. I could never keep track of whats on which disc without it. Used it for years.
Each Blu-ray disc hold 25GB of data.
I want one too. :p

Sort of off-topic, sorry but do Blu-ray players also play regular DVDs?
Al_B on 15/12/2010 at 23:37
Yes - although obviously with DVD quality not Blu-ray quality playback.
Unless you're posting spam in which case they don't.
