Jenesis, I always took "must be more righteous than the Pharisees" to mean that we will never be good enough to get to heaven on our own merrit, hence the cross.
Exactly.

Christian Pacifists make no sense. When people did bad things, God killed them, he killed thousands of egyptians, drowned armies, flooded planets, turned cities into salt. So why of why are there christians against violence and war, aslong as they are for actual reasons.

Strontium Dog, WTF ?
"ever wonder why the sabbath was switched from Saturday to "Sun"day?"
Because Jesus rose from the dead on the day after the Sabbath, the first day of the week, which we now happen to call Sunday, the christians would meet together on that day.

I love the hypocrisy in most "Christians."
Here in Utah, the Mormans aren't supposed to go shopping or out to eat on Sundays, because that makes people have to work.
However, they don't realize by going to church, they're making all kinds of people work just as well. The electricity that supplies their heating and lights must be monitored by some people wherever they make and transfer electricity. If they wanted to make sure people didn't have to work on Sunday, they would rig up generators to supply power on their holy day.
Now, they've made an even more demand on police, because they've outlawed concealed weapons in their churches. That's a whole different debate, but that makes a bit more of a demand on police, because the members of the church can't defend against some maniac attacking the church.
And it's a shame that people won't let their kids watch "fantasy" things on tv, like Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, but they'll let them be terrified of some biblical story.

Firstly, Mormons are not Christians. Christianity is based on faith in Christ alone, but the Mormon church advocates something very different. There is little to nothing in common between the Mormon church and the worldwide Christian church.
Secondly, if they interpret resting on the Sabbath that way, then they are making the same mistake the Pharisees did... they are over-interpreting the Bible and missing the spirit of the law vs. the letter of the law (as Paul would put it). One could say that breathing was work, so if Christians breathe on Sunday then they're violating the Sabbath commandment. Jesus himself discredited the way the Pharisees held the Sabbath.

Lawrence Heffernan, what a nice simple question.
:p
Ok, I'll have a go.
Most of what you describe belongs well and truely in the old testament. I'm not saying that God has changed, just that his course of action has changed.
Let me put it this way:
Up to the point when Jesus steped onto this earth, the world was like an ocean liner making its way through the seas of time, and God was trying to get people to understand that bad actions have bad consequences.
Now things have changed. The ship is sinking. Jesus is our life-boat. It's really not about who is good or bad anymore, it's just a matter of who will climb into the life-boat.
The central point of Jesus dying on the cross is that he was punished instead of us, which means that we no longer need to be punished for whatever crap we've done in our lives. All we need to do is to get into that life boat.
Now, about pacifism.
As God wants as many people as possible to get on board, it would make sense for him to let them live long enough to come to that decision. It would also make sense for christians to do the same.
Have a look at this web page:
(

I don't know what the rest of the site is like, but I do agree with what is said on that specific page.

Wow! Way to misread an entire post! :thumb:
First of all, I don't agree that Mormans are correct in their beliefs, but
they call themselves (
http://www.mormon.org/learn/0,8672,955-1,00.html) "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints." What part of Jesus Christ, hence "Christians", did you miss out on? There are like 400 different "Christian" churches, and none of them agree with each other. Just because you think these eccentric Christians aren't true Christians, I'm sure other churches wouldn't think you were either.
I said that
I believe that they need to have power generators if they're so big into the not making people work on Sundays. Mostly they do a good job of not going out to eat or shopping, etc. on Sundays.

If the 'Hells Angels' Motorcycle chaps start calling themselves 'Jesus Christ Angels', that would not mean that they are christians.
Look at what they believe, what they don't believe.
