Since I've kind of lost track what's being discussed, here's a link to one of those incredibly stupid and offending (
http://www.chick.com/reading/tracts/0042/0042_01.asp) Chick Tracts. Enjoy what some people come up with in the name of religion :tsktsk:

Everyone is into controlling people. You, me, and the rest of the world, religious bent or not.

You can't speak for
"jews in general", you have neither the authority, responsiblity, or priviledge to do so.
You can speak for yourself, and perhaps, a limited number of your acquaintances. But it ends there. Beyond that it becomes demagogic, and only your preferences.

Oh, Blackie, I can cite sources. you don't think I'm that dumb, do you? :D
Pick up anything written from a Jew to other Jews, and you'll hear the call for preservation of culture without compromise.

A "source" is the opinion of a third party. I reiterate.
You can only speak for yourself. You can use arguments from other sources as assisting you in forming your beliefs or opinions. But,
you are presumptive, and arrogant to "speak" for others who have not specifically appointed you to do so.
It is very like me "speaking for" the president of the USA, or any other titular head. Regardless of references or citations, I have not the authority to do so. So, I as you, am only able to speak for myself, not-with-standing that I speak "about" others.

If citing sources made one smart, Convict would be a wise person indeed...

Well, I'll concede that. But let me put it this way: Jews needn't respect the Messianics. And by and large they don't - as you can verify. First half is opinion, second half is fact.
theBlackman on 31/1/2004 at 23:19
VK, I have not entered the discussion about Messianic, Sephardic, Othodox or any other form of Judaism. I have expressed no opinions or thoughts about that subject.
My comments were directly to and about your claims to "speak" for an entire sub-culture of Judaism.
As we (you and me) have come to terms with that. I rest my case.

Ok, GayleSaver, it's understandable that orthodox jews do not want their fellow jews to become christians.
But let me put it this way. If a jewish believer
does become a christian, surely he/she should
not abandon his/her jewish roots and culture, but should nurture and celebrate them.
Or does the orthodox jewish community feel so insecure that such behaviour would be seen as a threat to their identity? That's not a dig, but a genuine question.

Quoting

Uncia the reason I was quoting expert scientific opinion in the abortion debate and in the cosmology/existence of God debate was because IMHO they know A LOT more than myself at least on these issues.
If I made the claims that these scientists made (without quoting) people would not believe them. I believe that it is wiser to show expert opinion in these matters.
