We have here in this thread the Four Horsemen of the Thread Apocalypse. If you stare at it too long, your mind will sizzle and burst from all the ass-talking.
Yeah, I usually try and stay out of debates concerning particular interpretations of scripture but for some reason I couldn't resist the siren call of a Christian hand-waving other Christians out of the faith.

15 years ago I would have agreed with you, and I would not have been as kind as GBM about it. But it is the validity of the bible which is the key here.

Becoming a Christian fundamentally involves God saying "Hey - guess what ... it's true!"
Once you've had that experience (which can be very low key), you'll know that 'the bible' is God's word. I can't explain it, it's just what millions of christians have experienced.
That's when things start getting murky. Which translation is the most accurate, what books should be counted as literal and what is just poetry, and how to interpret certain passages, that is all stuff that christians will argue about. Tons of stuff in the bible is meant symbolically, other things are historical accounts.

For true believers in evolution I would recommend Darwin's Black Box by Micheael J. Behe (A Professor of Biochemistry-not a creationist). It pretty much destroys the whole concept by it's analysis of living things on the molecular level. (Edit-I know that the offical theory is that humans have a common ancestor with apes- not a linear descent)

Why do I get the feeling you think the theory of evolution means we came from monkeys?
Uncia on 29/1/2004 at 00:25
True believers in evolution? Now there's an interesting choice of words.
*Zaccheus* on 29/1/2004 at 00:32
Who here has truely investigated evolution and come to their own conclusion that it must be true, based on first hand scientific discoveries.
I think most people just 'believe' that it's true, because 'the scientists' say so.
Just like I happen to believe that the earth is round, because loads of people tell me it is.
Agent Monkeysee, my point about the (modern english) pagans is that (as far as I know) they say that all humans are 'divine', and thus can accept the divinty of Jesus.
The same could be said for many followers of various faiths.
The Mormons have re-defined what 'Jesus being divine' means to them, as far as I know they do not believe Jesus to be the unique Son of a uniquely powerful God.
On the face of it, they seem to, but dig deeper and it all gets rather weird:
(
http://www.lightplanet.com/mormons/basic/godhead/farms_man.htm) What do Latter-day Saints mean when they say that God was once a man?

*Zaccheus* posted a response to my "Huh?" but it seems to have vanished between the time I read it and the time I hit quote.
And now it's back:

You know damn well that's not what I meant. Stop being so fucking obtuse.
Chimpy Chompy on 29/1/2004 at 00:36
There is no "belief in science". Let's knock that crap on the head. You can trust those who have used scientific methodoloy themselves but that's blatantly not the same thing.

Sorry, I moved it down to my most recent post.
This thread moves too fast.
<hr>
I'm not being obtuse.
Mormon's idea of 'divinity' is just as different as the pagan's.
