Well, not literally but figuratively.
I just played through the Bloodmoon main quest using a sword-shield fighter.
First indication of the problem occured during the werewolf attack on the Skaal village, After getting wacked around a bit (but survived), I went: "Hey, where's my ebony shield?" Check inventory to find that it was de-equipped and its condition is 0/1200. What happened? My charactor has Armourer as a minor skill and carries around repair hammers and prongs to keep her equipment in top condition in the field (plus, cheaper to buy hammers/prongs than repair the higher end ebony/daedric stuff).
Fast forward to the Werewolf maze. Took a few steps in with Captain Carius and got set on by 4-5 werewolves. After 30 seconds of frantic lupin butchering, the ebony shield was gone again (reduced to 0/1200 condition)! Spent a repair hammer to bring it back up to 1000++/1200 condition and after another fight with a werewolf and blocking ONE hit from it, the shield's condition dropped by about 600++!
There was no way I can keep the ebony shield in tiptop condition throughout the whole maze even with 10+ repair hammers in my inventory, plus I have to maintain my weapons as well. So after a few reloads and repeat testing with the ebony eating werewolves, I decided simply to accept it and when the shield got 'eaten', I would simply repair the shield a little just so it can be worn, then equip it just like that so at least it can block ONE hit before disintegrating again.
What is the problem here? Are the werewolves' claws enchanted to disintegrate shields and shields only or what? Apart from weapon damage from use, I never needed to repair the rest of my armour at all throughout the werewolf maze. Kaarstaag and Hircine's attack also didn't 'eat' my shield like that (blocking their attacks result only in 'normal' shield damage)?

Werewolves are immensely strong. You'll find the rest of your armor disappearing too, though shields tend to go a lot faster. The best bet is to create an item with Constant Effect Bound Shield. When (if) the shield gets broken, unequip and re-equip the item to re-Bound (ha, rebound!) the shield.
I had the same problem but I can't remember what I did. This may have been it.

The thing is, only my shield got disintegrated, the rest of my armour were totally untouched by the werewolves.
I was wearing a mix of Nordic Mail, Ebony, Daedric pieces plus Lord's Mail and Fists of Randagulf, and none of them were damaged by the werewolves EXCEPT the shield! That was why I was so perplexed. If my entire suit of armour's getting bashed up I would have been more accepting of the situation, but why only the shield?!
At the rate I was going, I should have went back for Chrysamere, but the shield worked normally against Kaarstaag and Hircine.

Any standard creature physical attack will only damage your shield, not your armor. Attacks from weapons, on the other hand, damage both shields and armor.

I just used the boots of blinding speed to zoom through the whole maze. Took a few tries, but sure beat fighting your way through warewolves and warewolves and warewolves and... and it kept my gear in top condition.:thumb:
