I've found the QuickJava add-on for Firefox to be pretty useful. It puts buttons on the bottom right of the browser window that let you toggle various options such as JavaScript, Flash, Silverlight, images, and a few other things. It also lets you choose which buttons you want to display, so if you want to leave something like images on all the time you don't have the clutter of an unneeded button. And I think you can put the buttons on the toolbar if you'd rather have them there.

... and ad-blockers aren't just for blocking ads. I got sick of that ****ing "like" button showing up on almost every web site I visited, so I added it to Ad-Block Plus. Worked like a charm! Now I don't have that annoying thing loading in the background, slowing things down and sitting there taunting me.
