Am busy knocking out the Mage Guild quests & the last couple of times I've beamed into the Mage' Guild in Ald 'ruhn, just as I approach Edwinna Elbert, an Ash Ghoul materializes & starts attacking me.
Normal? Game corruption? TIA.

First of all i haven't done the mages guild quests - there next on my list honest - but this seems very strange...
You didn't mention if you are playing the xbox or pc version which makes things harder but it sounds to me like you may have been playing around with the console in the past; am i right in this assumption?
What may have happened is some how you've set up a spawn point which by coincidence re-spawns an ash ghoul just as you get close to Edwinna.
On the other hand i may be talking rubbish but that's all i can think of at the moment.
(You better hope Forsythe returns from his 'forum holiday' he should be able to help you out.)

Red, TY for replying. FWIW, I'm on a PC, have patched versions 1 & 2 w/o incident, ditto the no-cd cracks. Haven't done anything in or w/the editor other than that which is required to save plug-ins. Have installed/uninstalled 3 un-official house mods & 2 real-sign mods & am running but 4 of the official plug-ins.
This also happened once b4 when in one of the now defunct house mods, specifically, a Caldera res mod (for reasons obvious). I was moving my plundered booty about when all of a sudden a Dremora Lord showed up uninvited/unexpected & began wailing away on me while I was in unarmed mode. Talk about jumping thru the roof! I thought, "OH NO! The dreaded mythic stealth assassin has finally appeared." But that wasn't it at all.
Anyhoo, I suspect these are just a few more examples of erroneous coding, bad pointers, some form of game corruption exotica, ala the void one can sometimes step/jump into, or the flying fish stuff recently reported.
Elsewise, AFA I can tell anyway, no impact on game play & the venture continues. Just that I've done so little of the main quest, & even less of the faction/guild/house stuff, that I was wondering if this sort of unexpected attack was rolled into the game by intent, maybe as a function of a player' level or time passage or some such. Sounds like, NOT!

Well you've got me stumped. :erg:
I haven't a clue why this should happen and i've never heard about anyone experiencing the same problem.
I'm sorry i can't help you out any more jstnomega i'm just glad it isn't anything that would cause you to have to start over...
If you do find an answer perhaps you could keep me and the others up to date just in case somone elses asks about this bug.
Sorry again.

Red, I just noticed your location. If you're in Castle Coombe, I envy you no end. I had the pleasure of walking into that timeless village Xams eve day, '71, & it was just as breath taking as stepping out of the boat hatch for the first time in Seyda Neen. All things considered, I'd really rather be in Oxford than anywhere else I've ever been.

ummm i am not sure about the recall and ash goul..
but the dremora lord while movin ya loot could be an error where the script on one of the items was triggered.. just like in a shrine.. when u steal that one particular item the dremora lord shows up...

You wont believe where i live!
I live in the exact village J.R.R. Tolkein based the shire on in the lord of the rings. I can walk out my house down the lane and stand in front of the old mill which was mentioned in the book. Not only that but the village very close to me is called 'Morton Underhill' which as everyone knows is the name Frodo took under the advice of Gandalf before as he left the shire. That isn all! The small river that runs between my village and Morton is named the 'Brandybuck' and finally the old name for the 'Morton Manor House' was 'Bagend Manor'.
I understand your comments about Oxford it is one of a few last great towns and cities in England - the architecture alone makes the place a worth well visit and the atmosphere of the city beats the bustle and strugle of London any day. :D

jstnomega: I think wun's likely got the answer for the Dremora Lord popping up like that; it's not inconceiveable that loading a plugin might 'reset' an object.
As to the Ash Ghouls... is it possible you used the console to summon some earlier? (if you do it wrong, you can make it so they'll respawn wherever you summoned them to) Or, if you meant an Ash Zombie popped up, did you grab a nap in there and forget to notice when you got attacked?
Other than that, "random glitch" is about as good an answer as any... :p

Forsythe, Thx for the input. Haven't (yet) used the tilde key/console thingy & haven't (yet) summoned anyone or thing. Seems like a random glitch thing, as last 1/2 dozen times thru that area were uneventful/normal.
jstnomega on 24/8/2002 at 15:03
They're back! & Forsythe, you are correct again Sir. Ash Zombies, not Ash Ghouls. I'm beginning to think something's amiss in Ald 'ruhn.
First time in that town was early on in the game. Was doing the usual help-one'self-to-the-contents-of-the-out-door-storage-containers pillaging when the "Your crime has been reported!" alarm went off. I was like level 2 or 3 & the town gds whacked me to oblivion in nothing flat. Needless to say, haven't removed anything fr those containers since.
Yesterday, rested/slept in the Mage Guild & got the 'You had a dream/Your journal has been updated' script. 'Cept my journal hadn't been updated. Hmmmm, strange. & going up the stairs towards the exit, there was another Ash Zombie laying in wait.
Across the street at the Fighters Guild, I tried resting/sleeping & got the 'You can't rest here. Enemies are nearby.' script. More strange. Went downstairs looking for the armorer to purchase some weapons repairs & there was another Ash Zombie just wandering around.
Both these baddies were scripted to attack on my approach, but were in close proximity to other Guild members & didn't bother them at all. Was like the Guild NPC's didn't see the baddie, even after the fight was on, cuz they didn't join in the attack.
Also, entering the bookseller stall in Ald 'ruhn is but one of two times I've stepped into the void. The void was red & resulted in a long duration fatal fall. The other void event was when jumping inside another cavern near the mine where you deliver the Flin for the Fighters Guild. A benign event - short duration & landed me near the mine egress door - but also quite a ways away fr Ald 'ruhn.
FWIW, my IBM 60gxp HD, or whatever the heck it's named, has an up-time of only a yr & I regularly run Gibson' SpinRite utility, so I know I've no bad sectors & the read/write heads are optimally aligned & that aint the issue. Have read of others hitting the void in Vivec, which I believe is a bigger area than Ald 'ruhn, but Vivec's been uneventful for me while, scriptwise, Ald 'ruhn's been my problem town.
Anyone else having strange happenings in Ald 'ruhn? Normal game coding hoohoo? Depends upon one' path thru the game? Heat or memory leak generated? So far, I can work around these events but Ald 'ruhn is making me nervous.
