During the Main Quest I have joined the Blades as a Knight-Brother. Can I advance in ranks? If so, do I advance by further progressing along the main quest, or are there any sidequests to gain ranks?

Bingo. It simply implies that you're a member (honorary?) of the Blades.
Multiple factions work this way, as you'll see through-out the game.

Thanks. It's just that the Blades seem closer to the MQ than e.g. Knights of the White Stallion or whatever...
