My comp has been running fine, however the other day when I went to boot it, I got a black screen. The monitor light would stay amber no matter what I tried. Took my wifes monitor, and it worked, so I know it's not the computer itself. (ran pc diagnostics and everything passed) I then removed the connection from my 8600GT and tried my regular monitor, Dell 1905FP, connecting it to the onboard graphics and it worked. I then hooked it back up to the 8600 and still had the same problem.
Does this mean for sure that the 8600 is cooked? I ask because I've been playing some fairly graphic intensive games, ME2, Stalker COP and haven't had any problems at all. No artifacts or burning odors. I also opened the case and took a look at the card itself and didn't see any burn marks or anything unusual.
I tried googling and they all had the same things to try. Check connections, unplug monitor, etc, but nothing worked. Now I'm stuck with really crappy onboard graphics which isn't the end of the world, (I can still play Thief, DE, etc,) but it would be nice to get the old card working as I can't afford anything new right now.
Any help appreciated.

If another monitor works fine while connected to the GPU, then I doubt the GPU is completely fried. If the GPU is connected to your monitor through DVI (and I'm assuming onboard graphics is VGA), it may actually be your monitor that is broken.

1) Did you try using your monitor with your wife's computer?
2) Did you connect both yours and your wife's monitor to the exact same port on the 8600 GT? (HDMI/VGA)
It could either be the monitor, or it could be a non-functioning port on the GPU.
Edit: Or, simply a malfunctioning video cable.
