Bear in mind that these are Wal-Mart shoppers, not actual human beings.

We dont have black friday in Canada.
Blaming Wal Mart is a pretty big cop out. I'm actually kind of mad that people would immediately point their fingers there. I'm sure the people pounding on the glass had good reason to want the doors opened, with 2 thousand people pressing them against it. On the other hand they'd be the people who were first to trample the guy.
If wal mart is irresponsible for not anticipating the need for tear gas, bean bags and rubber bullets... I suppose I have no comment.
I would be unfair to blame "america" or "the american people" because I'm sure not every american was out on black friday (or maybe they were seeing as how this is apparently a huge event). But seriously? For shopping? This is why I get in fights at nearly every concert I go to. I can't stand the prick behind me who is pushing me into the barricade just to get closer.
If I were the general american public... I'd be speaking out against the throng, Big Time! Call those people out, because there was no excuse at all. and blaming wal mart is like banning pit bulls. Some lady's dog was killed in Edmonton awhile back by a pit bull and when everyone yelled at the mayor to ban pit bulls from the city he said forget it. He wont punish the dogs for people being poor pet owners.
Don't let them get away with it. They murdered that guy, plain and simple. And since they can't jail 2000 people, they're going to get away with it. And they'll think they did nothing wrong.

Who the fuck is so poor that they have to wait for a sale at Walmart?
Gorgonseye on 30/11/2008 at 19:24
Decent human beings shop at Target anyway.

Well I'll 'cop-out' and be quick to blame Walmart (much more than the tramplers themselves) because Walmart and other stores create this atmosphere of gluttonous frenzy as part their marketing strategy. They call them "Gate Crasher Sales" and their message is the prices are so low people are beating down the doors to buy something.
These sales are glorified on TV and trumpeted in the flyers and the image of the ravenous hoard waiting to swoop down on the bargains (your bargains, damnit, not theirs) is carefully engineered but, as we saw, not executed in a manner considering the safety of staff or patrons.
What control of the situation could those at the front of the line exert on the press of people behind them, other than to run as fast as possible to avoid injury or death themselves? Can really you isolate blame with the people whose feet did the deed?
In such a case, the responsibility falls almost entirely on stores who create and exploited the madness of crowds.

Honestly, is this happening anywhere else? Surely even though not every American is doing it, when it happens in America, it's still a problem for the American people.

I have to side with Nicker on this one. The stores hype these sales and drum in the idea by opening at ungodly hours like 4AM with "special sale items" available "Only between 5 & 7 AM!!" It's no wonder people get run over since we all know that the "haves" are better than the "have nots".
The disturbing thing to me is that this happens every year. Either some hapless worker or some frenzied customer gets seriously injured or killed. If anybody really cared, these sales wouldn't happen anymore. People in general aren't bright enough to figure out that they are contributing to the insanity. Not a single person there, including the people who inflicted the killing damage to that worker, feels responsible. They have all bought into the shopping mentality where the only important thing is attaining their prize before somebody else steals their deal.
No thanks! I stay home on black friday.
