lets try throwing this here, maybe someone will know - got an old HP 8710P for free as it was pretty dead, but managed to resurrect it by changing the MXM gpu module. the battery was dead as well, so I've ordered a replacement. it fits, it works, it charges, but when I turn the machine off, I can't turn it on again (pressing the power button does nothing), until I remove the battery for a second and put it back, then I can press the power button again and it powers up and works normally.
never seen anything like that before, any ideas?

How does the laptop react to the power down/power up sequence when powered by a wall outlet instead of battery?

no issues if powered just by the charger (meaning, the battery is completely removed). also, it doesn't matter whether the charger is or isn't plugged in once the battery is installed, I still have to pop it out and in again if I want to power up.

Does it behave the same way with the old battery in it?

the old battery is completely dead, so it's not getting detected/not causing any issues.

Sounds like there's an issue with the battery's internal electronics to me.

it will be hard to test that, as I'm definitely not ordering another battery. I'll try to ask around, maybe someone in the neighborhood will have a compatible model I could borrow.

It could also be an issue with the laptop's battery detector (which only causes the error with a functional battery), but you'd need another proven functional and compatible battery to test that.
Checking whether the battery you bought has an error, by plugging it into a different compatible laptop, should still be the first thing you try.

yeah, getting my hands on a compatible laptop and/or battery temporarily would be ideal, but not sure whether I'll be that lucky.
//yep, it's the laptop, basically unable to start with a charged battery unless the battery has been freshly inserted. the only advice I've found was to update the BIOS, and that didn't help, so I'm going to sell/return the (now two) batteries, mark the machine as portable desktop only and be on my way.
