Well, after playing the demo I think I can safely say that Ryan = Shodan...
The last scene of the demo where he locks you in the room proves it. Its Shock set in the 50's.
Man thats kind of a let down...and whats this crap of not having an inventory?! That was the BEST part about Shock! ARGH!
Anyway, you can totally tell it was designed by the same guys as System Shock 2, 110%.

I've played the Bioshock demo yesterday, so no problem regarding spoilers. Since I should get my pre-ordered copy of Bioshock within the next days, I can start to find out a bit more.
And it did remind me of System Shock a few times. Being inside the bathyscaphe watching a Splicer kill that guy obviously reminded me of the scene from the start fo SS2 where we watch a hybrid kill that woman from behind the glass. Splicers themselves remind me of hybrids. The plasmids are very much like psi-powers. You have security cameras, and 'turrets'. And someone 'guiding' you from a remote location, communicating via the radio. And yes, Ryan did make me think of SHODAN.
I really liked what I've seen so far, and I'm looking forward to the complete game.

A very important distinction, philistine!

It's an airtight metal sphere, which takes you deep in the water. One is self-propelled, the other one is attached to cables. Regarding Bioshock, it doesn't matter which is which, all it matters is that you get inside an airtight metal sphere, and are taken to the ocean floor.

I didn't relate system shock at all with this demo, however some files were named "shockgame*****".
