They would be if you gave them a theological interpretation, which is about the same interpretation I often have when I see a scripted sequence in a game... They're good for storytelling though, better than a cutscene sometimes. I wouldn't want them taken out if it's the right game for them.

there are VITAL differences in this game and its predecessors
A) its not survival horror
B) the character is voiced and the game is cinematic with some on-rails combat sequences- this downgrades the 'game' to interactive entertainment just a notch above call of duty
C) its all up in the clouds which HAD to be the bright idea of some clueless promotion hunter managerial asshole that thinks gamers are complete idiots and his sole purpose is to cause as much destruction and suffering as possible
thats my gut feeling for game. ill play an unofficial version on release just to be sure but i've been wrong

Actually the protagonist in the first Bioshock was voiced as well, though only in (

Adam Jensen had a voice.
EDIT: Fuck... so did J.C. for that matter. Gordon has never had a voice and HL is a hell of a lot closer to a rail shooter than BioShock.

What the hell is wrong with voiced player characters? If anything having mute leads is hugely immersion breaking when everyone else speaks. (Having Dishonoured's Corvo communicate only through text/being mute the majority of the time is a huge downgrade from Garrett, IMO.)
Also I never bought the whole "SO THAT THE PLAYER CAN ASSIGN HIS OWN MOTIVES/PERSONALITY/ETC TO THE EMPTY VESSEL OF A CHARACTER" argument for mute leads. It's just excuse for lazier game writing, i.e. Half-Life 2.

You're being a bit harsh on Mr. Levine, don't you think?

Come to think of it, System Shock 2 had the same kind of 'Voiced in only 1 scene' protagonist.

Where to start...what's wrong with the sky setting? If I like it, does that mean I'm an idiot? Do you really think it was just one person's idea? How does the setting relate to causing "as much destruction and suffering as possible?" And why is this a bad thing? What's wrong with wanting a promotion? Wouldn't you rather have a manager making decisions than some intern? WHO INVENTED LIQUID SOAP AND WHY?

To be fair, while that doesn't really describe Levine he's certainly deserving of a little sharpness. Maybe not from a blithering idiot like our hermit friend here though.
