Maybe you should try playing in a less suicidal fashion. This isn't Quake. If you're getting your ass kicked, run away!
And make finding and activating the QBR on each map more of a priority.

I particularly endorse the OHSHITMYGUNISBROKENORIHAVENOBULLETSFUUUCKRUNNNNNNN method while playing SS2 for the first time. And believe me, restart the game as a Marine or Navy, you'll actually have fun.

Okay sweet, that's what I'm doing.
Fucking hell, if it wasn't for invisiblity I wouldn't have been able to even approach Decks 4 or 5 (got 4 finished now, moving up).

(
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=109076) I replayed SS2 about six months ago and basically the problem with going OSA was balance, for the first half of the game easily you're way behind the tech/gun curve and at a disadvantage in pretty much every combat situation, however when you get to that upper level of Psionic ability around the third act, the game pretty much opens up and becames hilariously simple. By the time I reached the latter stages of the game, I had a stupidly powerful set of psi-powers and was basically ghosting past leagues of enemies and conserving ammo for small confrontations and essential battles.
Playing as a grunt or tech-head has disadvantages too, you becomes solely reliant upon the available resources such as ammo and repairing tools, which become thinner in the middle to latter stages of the game - unless you've been an effective hoarding packrat until that point, as I was. :D

So which act am I in right now? I ask because I'm fucking worn into the ground. All I have are psi powers that I can't use because my psi's used up and there aren't any more hypos around except for the vending machine ones that cost too much because I can't hack them. I can't attack robots either because all I have is a wrench and they explode. I suppose I'm going to have to do some backtracking and scrounging.
I hate to complain so much, but man, this game is so unbelievably stressful.

Me too, but the problem was I didn't STOP being a pack rat at that point :p

Robots - Many of them don't have to be killed. If you have to kill them, use a wrench until they are about to die and finish them off with cryokinesis. For the bots with ranged weapons, you can often lure them to a spot where a barrier prevents them from shooting you while you bash away.
Conserve your ammo and psi hypos. If you're running out of psi hypos and you're only on deck 5, you're going to need to start playing smarter or you'll never make it. If you make it to the penultimate level as an OSA character, you will be rewarded. But not if you don't have any Psi hypos left.
If you left any loot on the previous levels, be sure to go back for it so you're well stocked before leaving deck 6. If you acquire the Psychogenic Cyber Affinity Psi power, then you can go back and hack security crates and replicators. Some replicators will give better deals than others when hacked. Find one that gives you psi hypos on the cheap and stock up.
And whatever you do, make sure you save 3 ice-picks for the end of the game. Otherwise it will be impossible for an OSA player to finish.

Nothing wrong with being a pack rat. It's not a shooter where twitch reflex skills are the key to playing well. The challenge is having a good strategy and making the most out of limited resources.

If you're running out of PSI hypos, you could also buy more of them from a replicator.

So I bought the psi ability that lets me transform ammo into nanites, which I planned on using to buy more hypos and build up a good supply. I spent my last nanites on hacking a machine to buy a hypo so I could use my new power. Turns out the spell doesn't work very efficiently, so now I have no nanites and no hypos.
please advise - not ready to restart yet.
