I'm on the third level of Bioshock (or maybe the 2nd) and, even though it's a great game, IT'S NO SYSTEM SHOCK II.
The first time I seen a ghost on system shock II I got shivers up my spine. But in Bioshock I thought it was lame. I've seen two ghosts now and both times were lame.
In fact one time, I respawned and was fighting a splicer right where the ghost appears.
BioShock did have one creepy moment so far, when I found the shot gun but other then that it just doesn't have the same creepy, mysterious atmosphere that SSII had. There's just too much going on, too many enemies and they respawn once you clear a room.
In SSII, you could go all over the ship and pick every lock and hack every safe. I even did that at the end of the game just before the Shodan Beat down. But in Bioshock you just progress level after lever like any other game. They say it's not linear, and it's not as linear as say Doom 3, but Bioshock is still linear.
I'm still early in the game but I'm with the guy in the other thread and wishing that they would just re-skin SSII with this engine.

Im getting the same impression as you from the demo. Just another fps game. I am still hopeful, but I dont think it will be up to my expectations :(

Yeah, i totally agree aswell! Would be cool if the modder community here came together and started making fan missions for Bioshock, in the SS2 spirit. We´ll find out soon enough if its moddable.

Bah. I'd rather see fan missions for SS2 in the Bioshock spirit.

Also, we have to be careful or else the project gets Foxxed due to legal reasons. Doesn't EA still have the rights for System Shock series?

I would rater play system shock 2 mods.
I'm a die hard fan, what can I say.
[EDIT]
We face the same problem with Deus Ex I and II, only that II never got any SDK at all.
The game might be modified a bit to make it happen in the future instead of the past (and maybe a master mind, just look at Gunman Chronicles) but anything else would be dangerously close to break the original IP.

If Bioshock is really such a disappointment for SS fans, then I'm curious to see how EA will handle SS3...

Yeah well and SS2 doesn't have the same atmosphere as SS1, now what ?
catbarf on 24/8/2007 at 22:09
I think the strange beeping techno music in SS1 really screws up the atmosphere, don't you?
