didn't they do this with the new xbox too?
If it's like the Xbox360 setup, getting a lower end package will be somewhat like "Pay $100 less because you don't really NEED all this stuff, but later on you will so pay us $200 to get back up to spec!".
MS seems to be on this huge consumer choice kick, but it's obvious they're not really thinking things through and the choices they're offering are amazingly stupid. With the new Xbox for instance, you get the harddrive and a nice wireless controller for the extra $100. You get everything you need right in the box. But with the lower end package you don't get the hardware required to save your games, so you either have to go out and buy a harddrive anyway, or get shafted royally and fork over $60 for the 64 meg memory card. You're not really saving any money with the cheaper package, it just seems that way when you first see it on the shelves.

Resistance will be futile. Why can't somebody just shoot Gates & be done with it? Every time I finally get used to a new system he comes up with another that's supposed to blow the one I have out of the water. When I finally realize I have to install his newest version because nothing worthwhile is compatible with my older version anymore (or will be very shortly), something always goes wrong and it turns out to be a living nightmare (BlackViper where the hell are you??!!). Sure, it'll be purely optional at first, but eventually you'll have no choice. I HATE THAT!!!!!
I agree with Headphones; just more crap that nobody wants or asked for. More crap to break down and glitch.

I would shoot him, but his robot sentries would probably try to kill me. That is, unless they experience an illegal operation and have to shut down.
I think I'll just stick with XP as long as I can. I despise new OS that you absolutely have to get.

Whilst it's no surprise to see that people haven't lost the Bill bashing ethic - I have only one gripe with Vista, and that's the draconian DRM 'features' that are being put into place.
The harnessing of the GPU to display the UI for example, is a great idea.
But I certainly won't be upgrading in a hurry, 'cause I want all my old shiznit to work.

Put me in the "won't update until there's good reason to" camp.
The DRM stuff really chaps my ass too, but there's not a lot I can do about it other than put it off.

Or as Bill would say, "If you can't make it good, at least make it look good."

OSX has been doing the 3D accelerated UI thing for awhile now.
I'm in the same boat as Ulukai. There are alot of nifty features being sported in Vista, but the DRM bullshit has really turned me off the OS altogether. So instead of getting it when it comes out, I'll just wait for the eventual consumer backlash and grab it when MS responds and fixes the more annoying features in it's first or second service pack.

Market segmentation is so gay.
I wish they would just fucking hurry up and get some decent audio sequencers made for Linux so I can get out of this fucking Microsoft hell hole with its ridiculously fancy GUI with ALPHA and ANIMATED MENUS and all kinds of shit only a child would find worthwhile.

All I want is for the "Create New Folder" button to move away from the "Go Up One Level" button. :(

Chunky figures make delicate work difficult, it's true. Fortunately I've been blessed with the hands of a concert pianist... or gynecologist. :erm:
