So how many people are going to go with the cut-down version, d'you reckon? :cheeky:
Linux and Mac OS are looking better all the time...

didn't they do this with the new xbox too?
release one with no fucking features that nobody wanted, i mean
there's choice and there's stupid
but i don't know, maybe it's making them lots of money, who cares

I can't see any features there that would make me want to upgrade from XPpro.
Reasons for upgrading your OS are things like having more advanced hardware that isn't supported under old OS (eg HD with > 2GB space, 64bit processor etc) or if its much more stable than the previous one.
Vista doesn't seem to have anything going for it.

I think the Ultimate edition will have to be the one. But a dual Linux install and/or a second machine with WinXP might be a must just in case.

d0om pretty much hits it there. People upgraded from 98 to XP because 98 was frankly pretty bad. System files would corrupt themselves, you'd crash all the time, so much as sneezing at Control Panel required a reboot.
But XP isn't actually too bad. It does what you need, when it crashes you can recover without having to restart, it runs games and applications pretty reasonably. There's no "finally a better system!" type of vibe with Vista. It's more along the lines of "how about we wait until it's less buggy, and someone's released a patch to get rid of all the DRM crap, then I might actually test it."

Except that Vista is going to be bought by people who are buying new PCs from PC World, for example. It'll be as inescapable as everything before it.

this is the same crap we hear everytime a new Win OS is unveiled. Do you have to run right out and buy it? No.

How can you resist not getting an os called ULTIMATE edition. It's like, THE editon to get. Cause it's like ULTIMATE you know.

Heh, looks like I'll be upgrading from 98 to XP just as XP becomes "obsolete".
