Well I think this problem stems from cultural attitudes that themselves are have been in part forged by the welfare system and the insane laws here. People want something for nothing and expect nothing to happen when they do unlawful somethings. And the sad thing is they get it. I've said it before and I'll say it again - don't be surprised if the number of ASBOs dished out increases when you ban caning at school/home.

Brutal violence - it's the only language these bastards understand.

Am I coming out of some closet when I say that I believe that children do not understand reason in the same way as adults do? You can't really moan about the lack of discipline amongst the young when you want to remove all means of it. And caning is hardly "brutal violence". We had it at my school and I'll wager that compared to the average in the UK there was a higher level of discipline and respect for the teachers. We are just too soft in this country and the latest laws "allowing" teachers to restrain children is evidence of this - it's time to turn it around; there have many cases where teachers have been in the dock over the stupidest things that relate to "assaulting" a pupil.

Random ideas that might help
1: put more money in poor peoples' pockets. Less likely to turn to crime if they can get a decent living out of honest work! And their kids will probably turn out better too. I'm interested in the the idea of achieving this simply by taxing low earners less. (as seen in new Lib Dem plans)
2: what paz says about consumer culture, with worth measured in how much cash you have in your pocket
3: americans trying to tell us we need more weapons kindly fuck off, ta
[edit]wate did I contradict myself with 1 and 2 there?

I approve of this "more castles" policy.
Needless to say, I don't think "squeeze social security ("welfare"?, what the fuck we're in BRITAIN) and introduce harsher punishments" is a particularly astute way of dealing with any matter, least of all this one. It is also strikes me as far too simplistic.

If you've a better idea I'd love to hear it. I can see 2 big problems in this country at the moment - one is the law, one is too many handouts for layabouts.
I most definately disagree with paying people more for doing less. What the f? And it's not taxing the poor less Chimpy, the nuts Lib Dem idea is to tax higher earners more. That is not the same thing and the limit they have suggested for the 50% (50-mofoing-%!!!) is far, far too low. There is all kinds of wrong with it.

Well, I'm not arrogant enough to assume I can swan around like Billy Big Bollocks pretending I have a glib answer to something which has been beyond the abilities of various capable (and less capable) democratic governments for a number of decades.
However, since it may be enlightening on certain levels - what are your proposals for the reform of legal and social security issues, in relation to the reduction of youth-related violence? Hopefully they'll be a little more in-depth and intelligent than "I can see 2 big problems in this country at the moment - one is the law, one is too many handouts for layabouts," but one can't have everything.

SubjEff, you're well behind the times there. We officially dropped the 50% tax-rate (
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/5358422.stm) earlier today, and a good thing too I reckon. When Chimpy refers to taxing the poor less, he's talking about our plans to abolish the lowest rate of income tax (10p in the pound), which would take two million people out of income tax altogether.
As for your "state benefits are to blame for juvenile delinquency" claim, that doesn't explain why a country like Sweden, where state benefits are FAR more generous, has much lower incidences of such crime.
