Bible, a source of ethical values? (Warning, religious thoughts!) - by Gorgonseye

Have you ever asked yourself WHO is told to do those things, and WHY they're told to do it? Are there any particular caveats to these actions? Better yet, does history show that the people who were told to do these things actually did them? Because if they didn't, you might consider the possibility that the original audience interpreted what was being said differently (and more accurately) than we Americans in 2008. The word we're looking for her is 'context'. Which I'm sure any attorney will tell you is of ultimate importance when interpreting LAW. Which is where these 'commandments' (read: case studies) come from.
The idea with all this 'put to death X' stuff, is to illustrate the seriousness of that particular crime/sin.

OH MY GOD THE BIBLE DOESN'T SAY ANYWHERE ANYTIME THAT SHALL NOT KILL. JESUS FUCKING CHRIST.
Sorry. Ten commandments.
Edit: Never bothered reading it myself.

Then you shouldn't comment as there is no "thou shalt not kill" commandment just like there is no "Play it again, Sam".
You want to be taken seriously? Don't misquote when the minor issue is actually a major one.

Yea, you're right, I should be more knowledgeable about a topic when I want to make a claim and call it fact. I don't know what more you want me to do bout it NOW though, since I already made the mistake, and apologized for my ignorance. That's all I really can do, and then promise not to make the same mistake again, and that's pretty much it, and that's all I'm going to do as well.
You think I should do more then that? Tell me it, and I'll make it happen. But I've done all I can about my mistake, to my knowledge that is.

Sounded to me like you were trying to justify yourself .

The point is that the "Ten Commandments" say 'do not do any murder' (and should probably be preceded with the word 'pre-meditated')- which is a completely different thing from 'do not kill' because 'killing' allows for capital punishment, genocide, and war. This complicates the issue far beyond the point of "Well the bible says thou shall not kill, but then it tells people to kill LOLz@! the bible is STUPID!!"
No, it's not the bible that's stupid. At least in this case.

Has anyone here actually read the bible cover to cover? You can't just skim through it and read it like any other book and then memorize it all. You actually have to apply all the teaching into your life and then where's the fun in that....You can't just pick a paragraph here or there..how do you live by the bible? At least the commandments are a basic guide. But isn't the bible kind of intolerant to being sexist and homophobic. How can anyone adhere to the authority of it? It's outdated. Who or how many people wrote it like they're getting a dictation from God himself?
I suggested some readings to G.E..they make far more sense to what he is questioning then the bible. think like Holden

Any book about people doing things people do and the predictable consequences of those things they did is outdated as soon as it's written.
