I guess I'm old but didn't Ozzy and Alice already perfect the 'we are evil/vampiric/satanic' thing in the late 70's early 80's? Didn't we kinda know back then that it was mainly to sell records? I'm still waiting for the punchline with some of these new bands.
Also, most of them suck huge cow dick. Ironically, the only 'new' metal band I've heard that bears listening to is As I Lay Dying and I think they're Christians (??).
I'll never forget seeing Type-0-Negative open for Ozzy in the early 90's (the first of his many farewell tours). It was sad watching them try to act evil when Ozzy's coming on an hour later. You're gonna play satanists in front of Ozzy? Nigga please.
I didn't care either way, I actually went to see Sepultura.

Whatever happened to the days when metal was for fun? All this hyper-serious i hate {fillintheblank} is old as shit and boring as hell.
The only new(er) metal band i really like is High on Fire. At least they got it right... loud music, lots of cigarettes and booze, video games, Lovecraft, and all the fun stuff... reminds me of Metallica's Kill 'Em All.
This prancing around trying to be shocking by these cheeser metal bands like Manson and CoF is stupid. Leave that up to Madonna and the like... she does it much better than these stupid twerps. They are a few notches lower than Boyz II Men in my book - icky stuff. Life is too short to be all stupid and shitty.

It should tell you something when Manson's best known songs are actually covers.

(
http://mastodonrocks.com/biography) Mastodon is fantastic, and unless lyrics inspired by Herman Melville, Norse or Hindi mythology and such are satanic they break the mold quite well.

I totally agree. I have no problem with metal being marketable, but make sure the music stands up. Perfect examples of shock/image + good music is Iron Maiden, Ozzy, old Alice Cooper, Tool (do they even count?),etc. Hell, even Zombie and Mudvayne did it better in the mid-90's than these shlups of late. If somebody's got an 'I AM EBIL' tattoo on their forehead, I usually assume that's about all they've got going on.
On the up side, I do miss the days of metal being snarky and humorous on occasion and not taking itself so seriously. All this brooding is fucking boring and Kurt did it better. Lighten the fuck up.
On a related note, I got a kick out of the new Dream Theater 'best of' album title. It has 22 tracks and is called "Dream Theater's Greatest Hits...and 21 other pretty cool songs." :thumb:

Kiss was the last great metal band. That's what you're saying?

i do like some of Mastodon's stuff - good catch. One of the vocalists is a little annoying, but the artwork on the Moby Dick album (can't remember the name) is fantastic. i have a copy in my car somewhere.
The hoarse singer is great, however, and, even despite the other vocalist, their creativity is top notch.

Rammstein sung in the language made for metal. I don't know what they are saying and somehow that makes it better. It's just so much purer when you can say HELL YEAH WHATEVER HE SAID! I get the feeling if I did know it would ruin it. Du hast mich?

Same goes for Einsturzende Neubauten, I never really thought of that before but it certainly rings true.
