Bible, a source of ethical values? (Warning, religious thoughts!) - by Gorgonseye

I don't know anyone who truly has.
The reason I tend to go on and on is that I have read it cover to cover - about 17 times. I've also read it in Hebrew twice and several times in Greek. Doesn't make my subjective interpretation more correct than anyone else, but I've developed a general working knowledge of the writer's intentions and the larger context.
Gray - I'll be damned if anyone can make sense of the Trinity. I can go on for hours about the function on each member but as for how they're "three in one, one in three," even the best theologian fall back on the old 'it's beyond the scope of our three dimensional understanding' defense. Which is shorthand for 'this makes fuck all sense.'
Edit: shit. I hate it when I end up at the top of the page in these thread.

Well, Fett, you are the ONE I know who truly has read it from cover to cover, and many times over!
Three-in-one.... People can understand the concept of marriage's two-become-one, why's this beyond understanding? Beyond words, certainly.
Even if it could be explained in words, I doubt it can be done in a nutshell presentation. This reminds me of debates arising from these passages:
Ge 1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness...
Ge 11:6 And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.
7 Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech.
8 So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city.
9 Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth.
One nation, one people, one tribe, one family, one God, united in purpose and in essence, one. Maybe.

Now we're talking in layman's terms here. It all makes so much more sense now.

He's speaking in tongues! Now we need an Interpretation!

As a rather outspoken atheist, I _have_ been thinking rather a lot about things. I'd happily debate you any day, but I don't speak for other atheists.
I think there are only two major points in the bible. Be nice, and pick up your crap before you leave. It doesn't really take the threat/promise of hell/heaven to understand that.
That's cool, because often I find it difficult to have a theological debate with most atheists on a purely metaphysical level (I'm sure with you it's possible) without them having Christian associations at some point. Either we talk about "god in general" or "Christian God" or "ancient Aztec deizies" for that matter. Perhaps they are more influenced by living in Christian society than they are willing to admit? All put together ends up quite messy. But since this thread is obviously about Christian concepts perhaps there is no way back.
It's nearly impossible to find an implicit atheist in our modern educated world. :(
For example i'm curious about opinion of atheists on the far future of the mankind. Because no atheist has answered me to my full satisfaction, why, if there is no God, humanity so desperately aspires to become one, step by step. Particularly I have on my mind the progress in genetical engineering and attempts to create better and more perfect arteficial intelligence. "If there is no God, is it necessary to invent him?". I don't see the science as a competitor or executioner of faith in divinity, which is inherently human... but if the science eventually, definitely kills God (in sense of a "higher universal instance"), it also makes us one. And at that point we most likely won't have interest in proving ourselves to our "children". You feel no need to prove yourself to an insect, since you are sure it won't understand. Or it sould be the other way - our children start to see themselves as Gods?
I also find it funny when atheists apontaneously use "Oh my God" or "Jesus Christ". That makes no logical sense.... Just a sidethought, heh.

It makes plenty of sense, it's a common expression that people use simply out of habit.

Generally, the aspirations of science have little to do with wanting to be a god. Genetic engineering, for example, was born not out of a desire for power but rather the practical applications of improving peoples' lives.

I agree. And there are some hardline atheists who attempt to divorce themselves from all Christianity, when (if you're born in the U.S., at least) it's not possible. We have such strong Christian roots that to try and sever them is a futile, pointless task. I am an atheist, and I celebrate Christmas. It doesn't have the religious connotations, but I'm not going to say 'No Christmas!' just because it's a religious holiday.
