Bible, a source of ethical values? (Warning, religious thoughts!) - by Gorgonseye

I've been thinking again, (Run away!) and it's starting to scare me again. A lot of folk I meet are just starting to bother me, and those who don't bother me directly, bother me in their reasoning for not bothering me. (What can I say, I'm irritable.)
Some people quite simply, are dicks. Some of them are dicks, other people are a bit better, they admit they're dickish folk, and do stuff to bother people because it entertains them. Honest dicks, pretty respectable once you get past all the dickery.
But what's getting to me have been a lot of very nice, yet nevertheless, religious punks. They insist we do these nice things, to avoid going to hell, we tell our kids to do things, because it's what Jesus told us to do. Or, "That's what the Bible told me" What happened to our parents saying, "Look kid, you're being a little prick." (This may or may not be an exaggeration of a mature parental statement.)
By no means do I think Christianity or the Bible, or the Quran, or the Torah, or the Book of Mormon, (Or any holy book really.) is a bad thing, but it's a bit concerning. We're losing our sense of ethics to what someone tells us.
This is made even worse when we discuss things on abortion. If you think it's wrong, it should because you think it's the wrong thing. Not because "The bible says killing is bad." The reason Jesus preached things about being a good person, we shouldn't be hiding behind our religion for our reasons. We should either think something is right or wrong at this point in our lives, once we're able to think for ourselves. If we think we should because it benefits ourselves, fine, but don't say something is more right because your book tells you too. The idea should be because we think it's okay to do, or not okay to do.
Scenario 1:"I want to do this because it serves me better." Fine, you have a reason.
Scenario 2:"We should do this because it helps others". Sure, seems nice enough.
Scenario 3:"I don't think Jesus would do this." Get out.
Translation: ARRRRRGH, YOU'RE LOSING YOUR FREE WILL TO THE MAN!
Am I the only one seeing this?
Edit: Please don't answer that.

please pick either sarcastic reply...
Option 1: (the short version)
wow what an original thought - you must be the only person that has thought this way before... give your self a cookie.
Option 2: (and this is my favourite as it make my actual point of view less ambiguous).
OH MY GOD - you are right! I have been following my faith BLINDLY - I have been blinded by my faith and have never put ANY thought into anything I have ever done because I have been blinded by my faith. It is like I was never capable of thinking for myself until you pointed this out to me! I have been letting Jesus think for me cause I am obvious a complete idoit - as evidence by my BLIND belief! I wouldn't even know what rational thought was even if Jesus himself pointed it out to me... (cause of the whole blindness ofcourse)...

Well, you did misspell idiot.
I already said, I never thought everyone was like this, nor do I think all Christians are idiots, however I am seeing a trend right now of my friends telling me in debates, "Well, our pastor told us not to, and that means Jesus said it was bad." I did not ever assume you were an idiot Raven, until you took my post, mangled it, and called me an idiot myself, and am actually ranting that all Christians are fools and that the Bible is a bad thing.
Feel free to carry on though.
I said my main concern is that people might be morally declining (Or at least my generation, i.e, high schoolers of today and what not), and instead of ethics itself, we're using the threat of punishment (hell) as sufficient information to stop someone from doing something bad.

How ironic that Raven spelled 'idiot' incorrectly.
Anyway, I should like to point out that it's not just religion. Any sort of dogmatic adherence to a concept will result in this sort of behavior, whether it's law, religion, writing- if you follow a book, group or even a general idea to the letter, you lose sight of the original purpose. You probably only notice it with religion because most faiths require a very strict adherence to their maxims, and because a very large percentage of the world population follows religion to a significant degree.
I agree that it's a horrible, horrible thing.
Edit: Ninja'd.

I was just telling someone, "You know what TTLG needs? More threads about the Bible. We just don't discuss the Bible enough."
And I come in here and BAM!.
It's like answered prayer.

Certainly a topic that I need refreshed with from time to time.

I just heard about that myself actually SD, and I have to say, it's stuff like that, that STARTED this thread, and I must say, it absolutely horrifies me, it horrifies me even further though when I post my concerns about this, folk like Raven jump in and think I'm hating on all of Christianity, it's not like I think people who believe in god are wrong or sick and twisted. Shoot, I'm just an agnostic.

That's so ridiculous it's almost amusing, except for the fact those idiots could use a good kicking in the face
Have there been any cases of people attacking these fools during their 'picketing'? This is North America after all, I'm surprised they haven't been shot at
