Would it be possible to have a subforum for beta testing? Maybe even where threads are invisible except to the author and whomever they whitelist.
I'd have a use for it, anyway.

The simple answer is that yes, that's possible and it's one of the (
https://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=126223) donation perks. It's been used in the past for a few larger projects where there has been enough activity to make it worth having a dedicated forum.
The forum itself would need an admin to add or remove people who would have access simply due to the way that vbulletin works but it's not a huge issue.
Alternatively, I believe there have been some other online forums hosted by members here specifically for private mission testing. I've not been personally involved in that but if you post a message in the Thief missions forum I'm sure you'll be pointed in the right direction if these still exist.
