Panzer General, Fantasy General and Magic: the Gathering/Shandalar -- there, you're set for life.

What DOS games are worth checking out? Do they all work on Win98?
Plenty of great ones. Most work on Windows 98; some you'll need to tell Windows to "Reboot in MS-DOS mode". And sometimes you'll need to set up a custom autoexec.bat and config.sys to boot into DOS with an alternate config. But it's great fun, trust me XD
Most of the games on GOG that use DOSBOX can be ported over to a real DOS PC. Sometimes you'll need to burn a CD to get it working properly though. Here's a useful topic on VOGONS related to this: (
http://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=37966)
For old-old DOS games, it's probably easiest to stick with DOSBOX, but newer stuff can really benefit from the performance on real hardware. I'll limit my suggestions to games in the latter category:
Star Wars: Tie Fighter (1995 CD-Rom Edition)
Blood (One Whole Unit)
Descent 1/2
Crusader: No Remorse/Regret
Under a Killing Moon/Pandora Directive (though these are a toss-up with all the CD swapping on real hardware)
Rise of the Triad
Star Wars: Dark Forces
System Shock (of course)
Terra Nova
Dungeon Keeper
And the usual ID/3D Realms/Raven FPSes, though they are usually better on source ports nowadays. Some of the above (Descent 2 and Dungeon Keeper notably) were originally released as DOS/Windows versions, but most digital releases nowadays only package the DOS version due to the ease of configuring it in DOSBOX.
You'll probably want to check out some thrift stores and pick up a DOS-compatible Gameport joystick though. I grabbed a Logitech WingMan Attack a while ago which fits the bill. Be wary of "Digital" Gameport joysticks; those usually require special Windows drivers and won't work in DOS.

Get some 3Dfx graphics cards (Voodoo2 or better), chuck those in and run in SLI.

The thing with dos games, is that nowadays 95% of em run great in dosbox. Thus removing the need for a super old retro PC from back then.

Evidently the motivation has little to do with actually running the games and more with running the system for its own sake. I guess I can understand it in theory, but for me it makes sense for systems like C64, Amiga, and the like.

Definitely. Same goes for consoles.

This. The build was basically a childhood dream pc my friend never got to have growing up. He lived next door and his family was never well off enough to have a pc that could play all these games well. I'm considering it on permanent loan even though he gave it away. I let him know I'd take care of it for him while he was gone.
As for why not use emulation, it's not really about practicality. Just 100% feels. He barely had much time outside of work between skyping his fiancé oversees and tying up loose ends for his departure. I doubt it saw much use. Guess he made it for some kind of closure.
I hate to say it's sadly wasted on me as I also don't have much time for gaming either.

I ordered a used Voodoo 5 5500! My friend is super stoked as that was the card he was originally gasing for. Hope it works...or fits in the case for that matter. If not I still has an nvidia 6200 256mb that does.

Yep, 98SE with some kind of unofficial patch / cannibalized XP drivers. Not sure about all the details but he followed some guide online. Can bootup in native DOS 7.0.

Good luck running build engine games at 800x600. DosBox works great, but you usually have to accept lower resolution/performance than you could get on a decent Pentium.
I also had major Joystick issues with Tie Fighter that I don't have on my Dos machine. I can also run beautifully at 640 x 480, when that resolution chugged in DosBox. As I mentioned in my previous post, all the games I listed can likely benefit from running on hardware vs DosBox. Crusader is an edge case, but I recall the videos chopping up sometimes in DosBox.

Crusader No Remorse I played through it many years ago. Ran perfectly fine for me.
Only games I've had issues running in it was the System Shock 1 and Eye of The Beholder 3. EOTB 3 I just could not get to work right no matter what I tried.
